Theodore found himself at university. He'd found his flat, found where to park his car, and moved into his designated room. It was alright. There were rooms on either side of the corridor, and he had his bedroom to himself. Sure, he had to share the bathrooms and the kitchens, but he could make do with it. There were no monsters, and that was most important. He didn't know what he would do if a goddamn gate opened to the Upside Down in Michigan.

Once he was unpacked, Theodore went into the kitchen. There was a landline there, and he knew he'd told Steve he'd call him once he got there. So he did. The line rang, and Theodore tried to ignore the way his stomach was churning from nerves. He missed Steve already. God, he was absolutely smitten.

"Hello?" came the crackled voice of Steve's mom.

"Hi, Mrs Harrington, it's Theodore -"

"Oh, the tragic boy from across the road," she said, leaving Theodore speechless. "STEVE! PHONE!"

Theodore heard the receiver clatter on the table, and he winced at the sound. Steve's mom was certainly a character. Blunt as ever. He was honestly surprised that she was there; his parents tended to go out of state or out of the damn country. It was one of those rare times that she (and presumably her husband) were home.

"Theo?" Steve's voice asked, and Theodore couldn't help but feel completely giddy and excited to hear Steve's voice. He wondered if Steve was as excited as him to hear from him.

"Yeah. Hi," he said. "I, um, I made it to Michigan,"

"Good. I was worried," he said, voice quiet. He couldn't risk his parents hearing him, had to control the emotions in his voice. "Anyone else there?"

"No. Just me for now. There are a lot of people in the other flats. I can hear them through the walls,"

Steve snorted. "You're gonna hate it," he said, and Theodore couldn't help but laugh. "You're gonna be surrounded by hippies who smoke pot, and people will be having sex at all hours of the night and partying. You'll be sat there in your little room listening to a cassette doing homework,"

Theodore couldn't stop himself, "Rather be doing you,"

Steve laughed, loud and excited. "Fool," he said. "You are crazy,"

"Yeah, I am," Theodore said, a fond smile on his face. "I thought I'd check in with you anyway, let you know I got here without issue. I need to go to the store, get some groceries, claim my shelf in the fridge,"

"Ooh, sharing with people. That'll humble you,"

"Uh, it'd humble you, Stevie. You're not one to share. I remember you stealing my KFC and refusing to share,"

Steve laughed. "OK, OK, I see your point. Go on and get some groceries. Settle in, rub a quick one out for me,"

"You are disgusting," Theodore said, unable to stop the smile on his face. "Absolutely disgusting. I'll talk to you later,"
