Chapter 19

Reyna

Piper and I kept each other balanced as we skated around the frozen lake.

We skated over to Ariadne and Hazel.
Hazel was trying to teach Ariadne how to skate on the ice. Ariadne held onto Hazel and Dot, as she practiced.

Soon, Ariadne was shooting around the ice. When she tried to stop however, she fell on her bottom.

Hazel and Dot Campbell skated over and helped her up. "Are you ok Ariadne?" Asked Hazel.

Ariadne nodded. "That was fun!"

"Glad you enjoyed yourself," I said. "Just maybe don't go so fast next time."

As we skated near a rocky outcrop, I heard a sickening crack.

As I glanced over at what had happened, I saw that Violet had fallen through the layer of ice that covered the lake. Penny was standing next to her, looking frightened and guilty.

Violet's head disappeared underneath the water as someone started screaming.

She luckily reappeared only about a second later, waving her arms and legs as she thrashed about.

"Help her!" Ethel Hadlow cried out.

Penny didn't move a muscle. She didn't even say a word. She was frozen, an exact replica of the ice below her.

No one else did anything either. They all stood there, looking at Violet, as she thrashed around, trying to keep her head above the water.

"Go and get one of the teachers," Scarlet yelled to a breathless and horrified Ivy. She nodded, and took off.

Scarlet then got on her hands and knees and started crawling towards the cracking hole in the ice where Violet was.

"Stop panicking Violet!" I said. "You have to stay calm! Ivy's getting help, just keep your head above the water!"

Nadia was still screaming her head off, which wasn't helping Violet stay calm.

I turned to Hazel. "Get all the other students away from here. Violet needs to stay calm if we're going to help her."

Hazel nodded. Annabeth and Thalia skated over, and they all started trying to bring the students to the shore. No one was listening however. Everyone was ignoring them.

"Students of Rookwood," spoke Piper. "Follow Hazel, Annabeth and Thalia away from here! Be calm, and be safe!"

Everybody's eyes glazed over, with the exception of Scarlet, Ariadne, Dot, Thalia, Piper, Annabeth, Hazel, Violet and me.

Thalia, Annabeth and Hazel led them all away. I got on my hands and knees like Scarlet had and crawled forward.

Scarlet and I got as close as we could get without falling in ourselves. "Get to the edge and see if you can hold on to it," said Scarlet to Violet.

Violet kicked her legs and felt for the surface. She raised her arms, breathing frantically and looking at us in terror.

"Help," Violet choked.

Scarlet and I grabbed Violet's hands, as she was just within arms reach.

"Stay calm" I ordered. "Help is on the way."

Luckily, just then Miss Bowler came running along the shore, carrying a life ring on her arm.
"McLean, Get off the ice!" She panted.

Piper nodded, skating around the hole, towards Miss Bowler.

Scarlet and I glanced at each other, and then at Miss Bowler, pleadingly.
Violet was gripping onto our hands for life. I doubted I could let go, even if I wanted to.
