Momo wasn't one to pry about someone's private life. Emphasis on the was. Since she's been hanging out with Todoroki's friends, her curiosity grew. It wasn't because his friends started the gossips or even acknowledged gossips. They questioned everything. It was mostly Midoriya, Asui, and Todoroki talking about Quirks while Iida reminded them about school work and Uraraka tried to navigate between the different subjects of conversation. At first, Midoriya included Momo into their conversation, wondering what she thought about some things. After a while, she would just tell her opinion, whether it was needed or not.
One morning, she and Koda entered the classroom at the same time.
"Good morning, Koda," she greeted him. "How was your weekend?"
It was natural to ask a person what they did in their free time. They didn't need to go into the details, but her mother taught her how to be a proper lady. It was the polite thing to do. Koda flushed.
"O-oh, fun. Kelly and I hit the park, went for a long walk, and um, fell asleep watching TV."
"Oh!" She hadn't expected him to give her a long answer. She smiled at him. "Sounds like a fun weekend with... Kelly, you said?"
"Y-yeah."
Momo hummed. She never heard that name before. Her curiosity tingled as she joined Todoroki's friends. They were close to hers and Todoroki's seat. She sat down and picked up the conversation they were in. Midoriya was frantically explaining to Uraraka that people with dog Quirks had more chances in police work than hero work. Todoroki was the first one to see her sit down. He acknowledged her with a small bow of the head. She flashed him a smile and went back into her thoughts. Who was Kelly? She felt a nudge and looked up. It was Todoroki.
"What're you thinking about?"
"O-oh," she flushed with embarrassment, "It's nothing really."
Now, Iida, Midoriya, and Uraraka were looking at her. She knew it wouldn't go unnoticed. Midoriya had sharp observation skills and Uraraka could feel a mind rumbling miles away. Iida was just Iida, their class representative.
"What is it?" he asked, concerned.
Momo's cheeks grew redder. "It's... well, I greeted Koda this morning and asked him how his weekend went. He told me he hit the park with a Kelly, went for a long walk, and fell asleep watching TV. So I was wondering. Is Kelly Koda's new girlfriend or his dog?"
"Um..." Uraraka seemed unsure. Todoroki went back into his thoughts. Iida seemed frozen in place.
"Uh..." Midoriya stared at her with a blank face. She knew her friends weren't the kind to listen to gossip, but this was Koda! Surely the quiet boy deserved better.
"Wait, no one knows Koda's girlfriend's name? Or if he even has a girlfriend?"
They all stared at each other.
"I think Kelly is his dog," Uraraka was the first one to speak up. "'Went for a long walk', that's what you do with a dog." She chuckled nervously, glancing at Midoriya.
"You can go for a long walk with a person!" he countered. "At sunset..." his eyes shifted towards Uraraka, "talking about nothing and everything."
Todoroki glared at them with a bored face. "Sounds awful," he turned to look at Momo. "Hit the park, that's a dog."
"My brother used to take me to the park all the time when I was younger," argued Iida, defrosting from his weird arm gesture.
Momo sighed.
"All right, we're doing this. Let's play "girlfriend or dog"."
Her friends seemed uncomfortable at first. Uraraka glanced at her and Momo tried to convey that she needed to shift the mood. Uraraka winked at her and clasped her hands together, getting the attention of the boys.
"C'mon guys! It's gonna be fun and Koda deserves better."
Midoriya beamed at her and nodded, followed by Iida and Todoroki. Momo looked up to find Koda. She saw him walking close to Hagakure's desk and waved her hand at him.
"Hey!"
Koda looked at the group. Momo beckoned him to join them. She cleared her throat.
"So, Koda, what do you do at the park with Kelly?"
Koda flushed once again. "O-oh, w-we just walk around. She gets ansty if she doesn't get outside enough, and then it's just... yap, yap, yap, all day long." He chuckled nervously.
"Hey, what's Kelly's favorite food?" asked Midoriya, sheered curiosity coated his voice.
"Peanut butter," Koda beamed. "She'll eat it right out of the jar!"
"How old is Kelly again?" questioned Iida, not sure if he remembered it correctly. They didn't, but they needed to coat their voice not to hurt Koda's feelings.
"Well, she just started her golden age, and she can be very energetic. Especially considering she got hit by that car a year ago."
"Oh no!" Momo winced, so did everyone. "That's so awful. Was she chasing something down the streets, or..."
"N-no," Koda rubbed the back of his head, "just getting me the newspaper."
Momo sighed. They weren't going anywhere with this.
"All right, this is useless. Koda, is Kelly your girlfriend or your dog?"
Koda choked on his own air. His eyes watered. "How can y-you ask me that?"
He left them, wiping his forming tears. They all looked at each other.
"I still don't know which it is," groaned Momo.
"Could be either," pointed out Midoriya.
"I could not tell you," sighed Iida.
Todoroki stood up. "One day, we'll figure it out. One day, we'll be there for Koda and he'll tell us everything."
Momo blinked at him. Was he serious? His face looked serious, but he always looked serious.
"Yeah, you're right!" Uraraka joined in. "We'll figure it! That's what heroes do."
She glanced at Midoriya. He blushed. "Y-yeah!"
"I'll be damn if I don't figure it out by the end of the year," exclaimed Iida.
Momo smiled at her friends. Yeah, they'll figure it out.
Little did they know, they'll never figure it out.
Ha! I find myself very funny, thank you very much. This was funny to write. I have been having writer's block for these one-shots lately and I'm happy to have found my flow once again. This show was created by Dan Goor and Micheal Shur.
Next up, an arc from the manga I haven't read!!!!! Isn't life just great? Kidding, there won't be spoilers for it *wink*
