There is someone who wants me dead.

Brooke had texted me. She had implored me to take her out of the hospital. Because she knew she was about to die — get killed there. And I didn't save her. There was no bringing her back. If there was anything I could do to give some rest to her soul, then it was to find the truth out.

I couldn't trust Hayden with this, not when Brooke had said he was bad news again and again. So, the next day I faked a stomachache, and when Hayden went to the office without me. I had gone to the hospital without telling anyone about it.

Stupid? Maybe. But I didn't want to risk Hayden stopping me from knowing the truth.

I first met Penelope Scott, who had nursed Brooke because she was amiable through all my visits. And had seemed to be one of those few people to mourn at Brooke's funeral.

"How are you coping up?" She inquired, her eyes warm.

"Fine. I hope it gets easy with time," I mused, gazing at the faint purple bruise on her wrist. A bruise I had spotted at the funeral and never before. "What happened to your wrist?"

"I- uh- nothing." She held her wrist with her other hand as if to hide her bruise. "A patient in the psychic ward became violent. Never mind it, lad."

"Was it Brooke?" I asked, knowing it couldn't be her and hoping it wasn't here.

Her face paled. "No, that lass was so calm in the thirty minutes she had lived after waking up from the coma. She didn't give any trouble."

"How could she be calm if she lost her baby?" I cocked a brow. Even if my question seemed judgmental, I didn't regret asking it. They had said she killed herself. And she had texted someone had wanted to kill her. There was something wrong.

"She would have if she had time. But they killed her long before — I mean, she killed herself." She amended, horror pooling her features.

"I know she was killed."

She put a finger against her lips, eyes scanning our surroundings. "Pretend you didn't know that. You don't want them coming for you."

"Who are they?"

"I don't know," she hissed. "And forget about this because her brothers paid the hospital and the police to pronounce the cause of her death as a suicide. If you tell anyone I told this, I'll deny it. Forget about this because these people can kill you like your husband."
