Katrina Diaz

I was married to Hayden Evans.

It had been exactly an hour since my mum had thrown the papers in my face and threatened to cut me off, and I was already married. We hadn't said our vows. We had no ceremony. We hadn't done anything like a real wedding.

We had put on rings in front of the judge and got finished with the paperwork within ten minutes with my mother and Hayden's mother and sister as the witness. I had got married in an oversized jumper, a pair of shorts and trainers. After the whole shenanigan in the courtroom, Hayden had made it clear that this whole marriage was a secret, and no one but the five of us, and would know about it.

Of course, things hadn't gone that way because we got mopped by the press as soon as we had exited the courtroom and Garrick Evans, Hayden's father, was giving a speech to the press.

He started the speech by praising my mum for raising a daughter who was the perfect match for his son. He then proceeded to quote how strong love — Hayden's and mine's apparent love — was and how we managed to stay true to each other despite Hayden's conventional engagement to Kendra. I had to give it to his rubbish speech for making it look like Hayden and I found love in an unconventional place, which would calm down the raucous in the media. Or maybe create more because there was no confirmation about Kendra's and Hayden's engagement until this moment.

"Why have you forgotten to keep a leash on your dog?" Hayden's alarming green eyes clashed with his mother's. Anne Evans paled, her hand nervously picking at her fingers.

My mouth fell open, processing his words. Did he just call his father a dog?

Before any of us could utter a word, Hayden's eyes cut to his sister and then to the car. She went and took her seat in the waiting car, obeying his silent command. He did the same with his mother, too. Then his eyes coasted over my frame.

Towering over me, he tilted his neck. "And what about you?"

"She'll come with you," answered my mum with a smile on her face. "After all, a married woman's place is next to her husband's."

"And where are you?" I inquired, voice dripping with sarcasm, unable to resist myself.

"Watch your tone, Kate." Her nostrils flared.

Throwing her an annoyed glare, I got into the seat beside Anne, who, by the way, was trembling, eyes anxiously studying Hayden's stance.

_______________

My mum had already packed my luggage and had her footman deliver it to Hayden's house. Despite my mum's idiocy, Anne had only been warming and inviting. Since I didn't know what tomorrow had in store for me, I had accepted her welcome, deciding to deal one day at a time.

And I was cheesed off.

At a point when my eyelids felt heavy, the sky was dark with the crescent moon shining in the inky sky.

Heat rose to my cheeks when I gazed at the sprinkling of rose petals which led to the bed like a red carpet. The bed was dressed in white sheets, sheer canopy curtains and orchids, making the atmosphere more romantic. Scented candles occupied bedside tables, drowning the room in their pleasant scent.

After changing into casual nightwear, I laid down on the bed, heart thumping in my chest, wondering what I should do next.

As if on cue, footsteps resonated through the silent room before the door creaked open. Resisting the urge to sit up and turn around to look at the person, I studied the shadow that fell over the wall opposite me.
