When Brooke, my ex-friend, had been distancing herself from me, I had thought it was because of the distance and lack of interactions. Maybe her odd behaviour and Cain's intolerable controlling nature had been my writing on the wall, but I had never suspected anything. Since I had given Cain my loyalty, I had expected the same from him.
The fact that two of the most trusted persons in my life had betrayed me hurt me so deeply that even two weeks didn't mend my heart, leaving only a single question to ring in my mind. Why? Why betray me like this when I had never intentionally hurt either of them?
Tears gushed out of my eyelids like water busting out of the open dam as my jaw quivered and the sounds of my sobs filled the room. The door flew open to reveal Freya, a worried look on her face. I blinked my tears away and sat up on my bed, pulling the comforters closer to my body.
"Kate, it's been two effing weeks! You have to stop thinking about those wankers..." she whispered, strolling over to my bed with her tote in her hands.
"How do you want me to be, your majesty?" I snapped, grabbing the tissue from the bedside table before wiping my tears with it.
"Stellar? Great? Brilliant. Something along those words." A mirthful smile clung to her lips. "Liam wants to take you out for clubbing. So you better get ready. And I have something to eat."
Burying my face into a pillow, I whined, "I don't have an appetite to eat."
Mirth underscored her voice. "Who said I brought it for you?"
Tilting my chin, I narrowed my eyes on my cousin, flipping her the bird as she threw her head back and chortled at my misery. Ignoring my rude gesture, she plucked a box out of her tote and my eyes read the label.
Nōka.
There were things in life that were worth sacrificing and there were things in life that were left untouched, but chocolate for me was neither. And when it was something like Nōka, I would fight tooth and nail to get that.
"Give me that!" I muttered, pouncing on her at once and snatching the box from her hands.
Freya, being the adult, suggested, "We can share it."
"There's no we when it comes to chocolate, cousin." I grinned, tearing open the wrapper of the first chocolate, and threw that mould into my mouth. As she narrowed her eyes into slits, Kendra cleared her throat, averting my cousin's attention from the chocolates.
"Tell me, how to crash a matchmaking event?" My sister asked as the chocolate started melting on my tongue, the cocoa savour rushing to my head.
Knowing Kendra, I wasn't at all surprised to find her flaxen hair dyed to a vibrant shade of red. Dying her hair was a necessity given her modelling profession. With her tall frame, slender figure, high cheekbones and dazzling features, she could cut a dash in even rags. Kendra inherited all her traits from my mom, who, by the way, imitated the late Diana Dors.
