Hayden Evans
I didn't hate a lot of people. My loathing was exclusively dedicated only to The Faerber and everything that was related to that name. Yet, I had a cult of people from whom I would unplug their life support just to plug into my DVD player, even if I wouldn't ever use that device. Garrick Evans was the president of that cult.
Sitting here in my office with a hectic schedule, reluctantly listening to Vanessa Winters' tirade, I realised Vanessa would soon overthrow Garrick to become the president of the above-stated cult. Suffice to say, it took all my self-restraint to not throw her out of the window.
"I'm so happy for you, Hayden. Finally, you're moving on with your life." An ingratiating smile tipped her lips. "I'm chuffed to bits, but I also have a niggle. Of all the girls you could have picked to marry, you chose Diaz. Not just a Diaz, but Katrina Diaz."
The scornful way she accented Spitfire's name stirred a ripple of anger in my blood. Refusing to show any sign of irritation, I gave her a cool look. "I know whom I am married to, Vanessa."
"Are you enjoying your life with your much younger bride?" She taunted me, taking a sip from her tea.
Katrina was an adult who was capable of making her own decisions. Sure, she was probably a sacrificial lamb in my plans, but she wasn't a prey and I wasn't a predator. Whatever we had was consensual. Vanessa had no business judging it. But that was Vanessa Winters, a snake through and through.
Just to irk her more, I nodded. "As content as a man can be."
Content! My arse! The day I would experience the true meaning of that word was when I had Liam's dogs piss on Theodore's grave.
"Brilliant!" A bogus laugh spilled from my lips. "I was wondering, do you think Diana will be pleased?"
This old hag! She was one of the few people who knew better than to throw Diana's name in a conversation with me. She knew how that name alone incised me. But she did it. And I? Well, I wanted to tear her to precision because I always returned favours, distressing ones more so than pleasing ones.
"It hadn't particularly crossed my mind." I waved a dismissive hand. "I regret to inform you, Diana is in the past, Vanessa."
Just as I wanted, her face contorted in rage tears pooling at the corner of her eyes. I had seen enough tears in my life to know if they were fake or real. Silently I applauded myself because Vanessa's tears were real. They were as real as the vengeance plumping in my blood.
Registering the sadism flaring in my eyes, she chose to rebut. "Very well, it was a pleasure talking to you, Hayden. I hope the best for you and your bride."
