My eyes drifted to Hayden's frame in the reflection. The black suit he wore properly highlighted his wide shoulders and stretched with his movements, but what arrested my attention was the first two buttons left unopened, showing off an achingly toned-to-perfection collarbones. Never before had I thought a man in a regular black suit and feet tucked into black boots could look so arresting.
He had picked the outfit in five minutes, and then there was me. After a search of nearly thirty minutes, I had managed to pick a shiny silver gown that featured a thigh-high split and shimmery train and a pair of high heels that the dress demanded. My hair was styled in waves that were side-swept on my shoulder and back.
While having ginger hair was a rarity which made redheads look like exotic species, the struggle to pick dresses and shades that complemented scarlet tresses was so not recommended because I could never be confident about my dresses when attending dinners.
"How is my dress?" I asked.
Hayden's eyes roved over me. "Like a silver foil."
"Alright." A pause. "And... how do I look?"
"Lustrous..." he picked up his perfume from the dressing table, leaning over me, his warm breath tickling me.
"That's not how you compliment someone." I pulled my lips into a thin line.
Amusement toyed with the corner of his lips. "That's exactly how I compliment you."
"No offence, hubs. But you have no redeeming quality."
That unsettling, possessive instinct flared. "You're stuck for a lifetime."
Taking a few steps back, he sprayed the perfume on himself, flooding my senses with the familiar scent of Cedarwood and White pepper.
"Divorce these days is pretty easy."
He placed the perfume back in its place, mumbling in my ears. "You can try."
"Rodger will be my lawyer-"
Turning me around, holding me so I wouldn't trip, he shut me up with a kiss, not gentle, per se, but the press of his mouth reminded me how kissing my husband could become an addiction, making divorce an improbable event. He kissed every part of my lips, the corners, the rims, the pillowing fullness, devouring me with the efficiency of an experienced man.
"With a little more practice, kissing can become one of your redeeming qualities." I pulled back with a grin.
"Oh?" Hayden's fingers trailed to the zipper of my dress. "I beg your pardon."
