"Oh come off it, Kili, that didn't actually happen." Merlin exclaimed in denial. They ended up leaving Baggins' home early that morning and the warlock gravitated to riding next to the twins. He wasn't wrong yesterday when he thought that they seemed mischievous. All morning since leaving they've been telling him of grand adventures they've been on that seemed too far fetched to be real. The sniggers and eye rolls from all the other dwarves told him as such.
It felt a lot like he was talking to Gwaine and while it made him joyous to make a new friend like him, it also left a sense of longing and sadness in the pit of his stomach.
Last night after the hobbit past out Merlin had listened more into their story and the somber song they sang settled his resolve in helping them. It was full of pain and heartache, no one should have to go through losing their home. Merlin has lost his before and he knows all too well the suffering that a small amount of time away can cause. These dwarves had their home taken for far longer than him and he promises to help them get it back with every fiber in his being.
Earlier in the night Gandalf had left to tend to Bilbo and by the absence of the small fellow the warlock assumes the old man had no luck in convincing him to join the quest. Instead, they left the hobbit to sleep in and packed the extra pony the dwarves had gotten for their last party member full of supplies. Myrtle was a calm animal and it was no surprise to him that they were nice enough to get her for the supposed to be new member.
The dwarves were all very kind and there was no doubt in his mind that he was going to become the best of friends with them all.
Kili gasped and held his chest with the free hand not holding the reign's of his pony. "Are you calling me a liar, Emrys? I would never!" He joked dramatically while his brother Fili's grin he'd been sporting the whole time got even larger. The talking and joking hadn't stopped once since they left. Both Merlin and Kili wouldn't let it.
"Big talk for someone who got us lost yesterday and said he knew where he was going." The blonde twin pitched in and sent a loud wave of laughter over the company as his brother pouted.
The company continued to laugh and talk amongst themselves for quite a long while until suddenly there was a shout from behind them. The voice was out of breath and very familiar, please don't let it be Bilbo. Merlin wasn't a biased person, really he wasn't, but the hobbit gave off a vibe not meant for the wilderness and the raven did not want to have to deal with protecting an idiot friend that almost died all the time. He's done with that and if Bilbo was going to be joining the quest Merlin eventually would befriend him and want to keep him safe. He's tired of keeping people blind to dangers out of harm's way. Thorin looked just as disgruntled as the warlock, possibly more so.
"Wait!... I...signed it! I signed it!" The hobbit came running up alongside the stopped ponies and horses, whipping the contract given to them both last night in the air. He made his way up to Balin before he stopped running and was very out of breath. Did he run all the way there?
"Seems everything is in order." Balin said, looking at the contract with a reading glass. "Welcome, Mr. Baggins, to the company of Thorin Oakensheild." He smiled, wrinkles crinkling with age and reminding the raven of a friendly grandfather type person.
Merlin liked Balin, but why did he have to say yes to Bilbo?!
Blue orbs resisted the urge to look away in annoyance and Merlin's face muscles twitched to contain the scowl that wanted to go on his face. He betted against Bilbo coming and even prayed to the Triple Goddess herself that the town person wouldn't even consider joining them. Kili looked to him with a smirk and held a hand out for the gold Merlin had bet with him on the chances of the hobbit showing up. "Oh, shut it." Merlin said grumpily in good nature and tossed a small bag of coins to the dwarf.
