a/n: from here onwards, the stories will be about yuna's past (including the events with taehee, before she fell from the roof)

december 2008

the little girl in a red padded jacket looked up. her face covered in a knitted shawl her mother made for her. the puff of smoke coming out from her nostrills as she breathe in the cold air. the snow flakes glided in the sky dropping to her face and melting from the hear she radiated. she giggled from the sensation. she's 5 now! she's a big girl! she thought happily.

"yuna" a familiar feminine sound called her. she turned around, her hair flipping as she did so. she looked at her mother with such joy and ran to her giggling. she just went out of her favourite jjajangmyeon restaurant as they celebrated her birthday. they walked slowly through the snow, her small gloved hand in her mother's bigger one.

"eomma, where are we going?" she asked. her sweet cheerful voice feeling her mother's ears but that happiness was not what her mother was feeling. but she held it in. she took a deep breath to hold her tears. its for the best she thought. she put on a small smile.

"we're going to a castle where you're going to live happily ever after!" she said.

"yeayy!!" she giggled skipping despite the slippery snow below her.

but the little girl stopped and frowned. her eyebrows knitted together deep in thought. "why 'you'? why not 'we'?" the mother could see the huge house on the end of the road. a few more houses.

she stayed quiet and continued walking. the cold breeze blowed their hair.

when she reached the gates of the house. she kneeled on the snow covered pavement beside her daughter. she bit her lips and uttered the words that she resented the most. a goodbye.

"i can't, my dear. you shall live with your father." she said.

the daughter's eyes lit up. "i have a father?" she never knew she had one. since she was born into this world it had only been her and and her mother. but she quickly frowned. "where are you going? why can't you live with father?" she asked. i seemed surreal to her. there was no way her mother was going to leave her. the huge door swung open revealing a man. his spectacles reflecting the moonlit sky and his face stoic and cold.

"hojoon" the mother greeted. "seyeon" the man greeted back. both toneless and seemed so distant. "yuna-ya." her toned changed as she talked to her beloved daughter. "meet your appa, shin hojoon." the man opened the gate and gestured yuna to get in. he did not seem to like her. not even one bit and the child was scared of him. she clutched to her mother's jacket not wanting to let go. the mother took her hands off and pushed her towards her dad.

yuna kept on shaking her head no. she did not want to be in this place. she wanted to be with her mother. her mother looked at her in the eyes. her eyes teary. she did not want to let go of her child also but she could not afford to pay for her. she would have a better chance at life with her father and his wife just as they promised her. she was just a mere waitress. not earning enough to stay alive for the both of them. she kissed her daughter in the cheeks. "im sorry, baby" she took her daughter's hand off as she left running. tears flowing down her cheeks and dropped from her chin as she heard the wailing of her child being held back by her father. powerless.
