A/N This is the outfit Rey is wearing today in this chapter. Someone buy it please! It's so pretty, I love it!
Rey was lucky that Sasha's vet was able to see her the next day. After explaining it was a matter of urgency, the vet office was able to schedule Sasha to be seen the first thing the next morning. Sasha sat patiently at Rey's feet as she sat on a chair inside the office. Rey impatiently tapped her foot, chewing her bottom lip to pieces with nerves.
The bell above the door chimed and both Rey and Sasha perked up. It was none other than Ben. Their eyes met and all he could do was stare bashfully at her for a moment.
"Guess this means I'm at the right place." He joked. Rey just pursed her lips and continued her foot tapping. Ben awkwardly sat on the chair next to Rey. Sasha pulled on her lead to approach Ben, licking his hand as he reached out to pet her. Rey sighed, exasperated. Sasha was SUCH a flirt.
The door leading leading to the patient rooms opened and a vet tech stuck her head out."Sasha?" She asked, smiling at Rey.
"Yes." Rey said, gripping the lead and standing up. Ben stood as well."This way please. Room 6." The tech said, gesturing them to go to the end of the hall. Ben followed Rey and Sasha in. Rey explained the accident to the tech vet and her face grew redder as she re-encountered the accident. The vet took it in stride nodding and smiling as she scribbled on a clipboard.
"And you are.. the father?" The tech asked, looking at Ben. Ben choked on his own spit, and coughed for a few seconds.
"Of the sire." The tech clarified.
"The sire?" Ben asked, momentarily confused. He blinked before nodding. "Oh. Yes. I'm the owner of the second party involved."
The tech just smiled at him while Rey glared at him.
"Okay well I am going to take her back for an ultrasound and hopefully I'll be back with good news.
The tech took the lead from Rey and led Sasha out of the room. Rey sighed and sat down. The silence was thick with un-ease.
As the minutes passed, Ben began to pace nervously inside the tiny room. Back and forth. Over and over again. With such long legs, it only took him 3 steps to go from one end of the room to the other. Occasionally, he would run his hands through his hair, agitated. His pacing stopped as the tech entered again.
"Congratulations! You're expecting puppies!" She exclaimed.
The tech handed a black and white printout to Rey. Rey reached out with shaky hands and took the photo. She squinted at the mass of gray depicted on the photo and slowly lowered the image. She turned to her ashen faced companion. Ben was sheet white.
"This is all your fault!" She shrieked, pointing a finger at him, taking the blame to him.
"My fault? I didn't tell my dog to hump yours!" Ben shouted at her.
"She is NOT my dog!" Rey yelled back.
The tech looked startled at the outburst and slowly backed towards the door.
"Dr. Hooper will be with you shortly." She said as she bailed from the room.
"You should have neutered your dog!"
"It's called SPAYING, thank you very much, and Sasha's owner is-"
The door opened and Dr. Hooper and Sasha walked in. Sasha's tongue hanged happily from her mouth.
"Hi I'm Dr. Hooper." The vet introduced herself to Rey, who was red with anger.
"So, I take it you aren't happy with the news?" She asked, looking at their faces."It's.. shocking to say the least." Rey looked at Ben who shrugged.
"Well, that's what happens when you don't spay or neuter your dog." She said, matter of factly. Rey shot Ben a dirty look as Dr. Hooper flipped through the clipboard.
"It says you are Sasha's caregiver. Temporary, Miss Jackson?"
"Yes."
"And how long until her owner returns?"
Rey gritted her teeth. "Seven weeks."
Dr. Hooper sighed, "I hate to be the giver of bad news, but it seems Sasha will give birth before her owner returns."
Rey groaned, and put her head in her hands."Sasha is perfectly healthy. Her hormone levels are normal for a pup that's pregnant at her age. I'd say in five weeks, you'll have a litter of healthy pups."
Rey was silent as Dr. Hooper's words sunk in. Sasha clacked around the room, trying to get attention from Rey, pawing at her leg. When Rey didn't respond, she went to Ben and begged him for attention. He crouched down and scratched behind her ears.
"Do you have any questions? I can provide pamphlets for you to take home and we can schedule by weekly appointments to keep up her progress."
"Err, does she need any special food, vitamins or exercise?" Rey asked, biting at her lips.
"No special food or vitamins for now. If she gets lethargic, then we might prescribe some, walks are great, but as her pregnancy continues, restrict from walks."
"Got it."
"I'll have Remira get you the pamphlets." She turned to exit the room.
"Wait!"
Dr. Hooper stopped and turned around.
"How many puppies is Sasha expected to have?" Rey asked, looking back at the ultrasound.
"Oh, I don't know. It's a little too early to tell but I estimate around 8 puppies."
"8?" Rey repeated.
"Around that. Dogs are harder to scan than humans. Have a good day." Dr. Hooper smiled, and left.
"Eight puppies Sasha? Really?" Rey screeched. Sasha just wagged her tail excitedly. Rey grumbled to herself. Ben held Sasha's lead out to her and Rey snatched it rudely out of his hands. She clipped the lead to Sasha's collar and stormed out of the room towards the desk. Ben trailed behind, his eyes furious like thunder clouds. Justin would be in for it when he got home.
"Checking out?" The woman at the desk asked. Rey nodded. The attendant tapped away on her computer.
"All right. Your total comes to $212.89."
"Can you bill it to Sasha's owner?" Rey asked. The attendant clicked some more on the computer before shaking her head.
"Sorry Miss Jackson, but Sasha's owner doesn't have a card attached to the patient's account."
Rey blanched, and her stomach sank. She bit her chewed up lips as she reached into her back pocket and pulled out her wallet.
"I'll pay for it."
Rey's head snapped up as Ben handed the attendant a silver card. "You didn't need to do that." Rey said quietly. "Hey, it's my fault, remember?" Rey blushed for probably the millionth time that day. "We'll see you in two weeks, Miss Jackson!" The attendant said, smiling.
They crossed the parking lot and Rey stopped at the car. "Well, thank you for paying. That was kind of you." Rey said. "Hey, my dog was the one who knocked her up so just think of it as child support." Rey laughed.
"Do you uh.. need help booking appointments? Or for me to come to any of them?" "Uh, no, I don't think so. I think I'll just keep you in the loop of it all?"
"Yeah, sure." Ben said, a little unsatisfied.
Rey lifted Sasha into the backseat and Ben walked off. As they drove off, Rey looked into the mirror. "When we get home, missy, we are calling your father."
