Everyone else in the Burrow was sound asleep except Anna, who stared up at the ceiling - too uncomfortable to go to sleep, but comfortable enough to lie still, trying to pinpoint where the pain was coming from. She soon realized that the hurt was not physical, but an ache in her chest, and she immediately knew a way to amend it.
She knew she should’ve been sleeping - as they all had to wake up in a few hours at the crack of dawn to make it in time to the World Cup, but this was also important - something that was more important than an hour of sleep.
Anna silently slipped on her sneakers, grabbing her flashlight from her nightstand as she quietly exited the Burrow. She only stopped once she arrived at the creek, where she had been found unconscious only a year ago.
Since everyone in the muggle world thought she was dead(A cover story so that the Muggles wouldn't suspect anything), she couldn’t go to the funeral without arising suspicion about the situation, and drawing attention to the wizarding world. So, she had made her foster family’s own funeral by the creek, making each of them a crown of flowers before sending them off in the water, a symbol of letting them go. Now, whenever she missed them, she’d simply come to the lake and talk to them - hoping that they could hear her from wherever they were now.
“Hi Andrea. Francis. Bianca. Evan.” Anna said quietly. Each name felt like a stab, reminding her just how many people she had lost. “I hope you guys are okay...and you guys are probably with my parents now, partying it up wherever you are.” Anna wiped away a silent tear from her face.
“I miss you guys.” She added with a small laugh. “It feels like it’s been forever since I last saw you, and so much has changed.” She said. “I can turn into a chinchilla, for instance. Um..my godfather is a wanted criminal, and I’m living with my best friends.” Anna suggested, tucking a strawberry curl behind her ear.
“Um...Cedric - my boyfriend...um....I don’t really know if he likes me anymore.” Anna admitted quietly. “But that’s okay. I just hope he’s not in any sort of trouble. And we’re all going to the Quidditch World Cup tomorrow. It’s going to be fun. Harry and Hermione are coming with us, and I don’t really know who we’re going to cheer for, but choosing your favorite team is half the fun, I guess.”
She took a deep breath. “Um...yeah. So that’s it.” Anna paused. She didn’t know what she was hoping for - maybe some unexplainable event that just had to be her deceased foster family, but nothing happened, causing Anna to believe that there were some things that magic couldn’t change.
“Right.” She said, chastising herself for getting her hopes up as she stood up, brushing the moist soil from her pajama pants. “Er...goodbye, guys. I won't bother you again.” She said, walking back to the Burrow when a gust of cool air suddenly ran across her skin, providing some relief from the muggy weather, causing Anna to look up and see the stars shining a little brighter.
Regardless of whether Anna was hallucinating, it still brought a small smile to her face, and filled her with the comfort she needed as she walked back to the house - a bit of a bounce in her step.
Life was never hopeless, and those words were something Anna had to hold onto. Two sets of her parents may be dead, along with her foster brother and sister, but though they were gone, Anna had to believe they were in a better place now.
Because if they weren’t, the truth might just destroy her.
