Chapter Twenty-Five: Silver-Eyes

The next few days had been some of the most stressful of Anna’s life - and as someone who had heard voices in the walls, lost both sets of parents, had the ability to turn into an animal, and who had been in a coma for half a year in her lifetime, that was saying a lot.

Books and papers cluttered her bed and her trunks - not to mention the fact she hadn’t showered in Merlin-knows-how-long - and blots of ink were speckled all over her skin as Anna attempted to take notes of all the spells Harry might need for his tasks. But the fact that she had an antsy young panther to care for didn’t really help matters either.

Mummy. Mummy. I want to play!” Boudica whined, rubbing up against Anna’s shoulders. Now at around 10 months old, she had grown to 75 pounds - which was about average for her species, but it definitely made denying her requests a lot harder.

“Not now, Boudica. I’m trying to work.”

Pretty, pretty please? I wanna see Silver-Eyes again!

And of course, like half of all the other girls in the school, Boudica had to have the biggest crush on Draco Malfoy - giving him the pet-name ‘Silver-Eyes’ while Cedric himself was still stuck at ‘That Boy’.

“Draco is probably busy too.” Anna reminded her as Boudica huffed - plopping herself down on top of Anna’s books with her head on her lap.

Mummy - but I never get to see him while you get to see him every day - and there was that night at the room with the stars, remember?” She complained.

“That was once - one time! And we were in detention - cleaning up the Astronomy tower.” Anna pointed out. “Besides - he probably thinks I’m remedial, considering the hundreds of times I've asked him to meet for potions help for your sake. And I’m getting the highest scores in potions.”

Please Mummy.”

“Boudica-”

PLEASE Mummy.”

“I’ll hunt in the woods with you tonight!”

PLEASE MUMMY!

Anna huffed as she slammed her spells book shut and jumped out of bed as she began to strap on her sneakers and slid on her furry cerise pink jacket. “Who taught you to become so stubborn.” Anna muttered under her breath.

Boudica giggled. “You did.”

“Well, it seems even after Professor McGongall ended our nifty little detention, you just couldn’t bear to see me go.” Draco teased - eyes sparkling with mischief as Boudica jumped up and down excitedly - licking affectionately at the skin of Draco’s palms.

“Get off your high horse, Draco.” Anna rolled her eyes, but couldn’t quite hide her smile. “We may be friends now, but you’re still an overconfident git.”

“And you are still the most obstinate girl I’ve ever met, so that makes us even.” He looked back over their notes, shaking his head. “I don’t even know why you needed me to help you - you might be almost as good as me.”

“How do you know I didn’t just want to look into your bottomless cloudy-grey eyes?” She said airly - feigning the most ‘lovesick’ tone she could muster. Anna laughed at herself. “Besides, I can’t talk to you as ‘Draco Malfoy’ in front of all of your little Slytherin friends. Alone you’re a bit...less of a wanker.”

“My friends aren’t all bad. Sure, they’re probably a bit nastier towards you and your friends, but your lot are all such...Gryffindors. So..self righteous and arrogant.”

She punched his shoulder. “Oh. So the only way to be accepted into the Slytherin crowd is to put myself up on a pedestal and pretend that I’m better than everyone else.”

“We are better than everyone else.” He insisted. “If you’re a pureblood, you are  automatically above an entire class of people. Like Granger and all those who have muggle blood in them.”

“Like me?” Anna deadpanned. “So, because my mother was muggle-born, I’m not worthy to be a witch.”

Draco shook his head. “You’re different.”

“How am I different? I was raised by muggles my entire life. I practically am a muggle-born.”

“You live with the Weasley’s now, don’t you?” He pointed out. “Plus - you’re good at potions and all this magical stuff. You’re meant to be here.”

“Hermione is top of our entire class, and she is the most brilliant witch I know.” Anna countered. “She’s meant to be here too, Draco.”

“But she’s - her parents are-”

“Also some of the most intelligent people I’ve ever met.” She finished for him. Anna sighed. “Look, I know I’m not going to change your mind. I didn’t grow up with the same set of ideals, or parents, or world, even. But, I grew up learning to respect everyone around me. Because they also have a lot going on that we might not know about.”

“Why should I?” He counteres. “It’s not my job to care about them - about their feelings.” Draco stood up, not even looking back at her. “You aren’t going to change me or whatever. A lot of girls think they can. But I’m just who I am. Draco Lucius Malfoy - the unforgiving Slytherin.”

“Is that really who you want to be, Draco? A cruel, unforgiving person who doesn’t give a damn about anyone else?” Anna clenched her fists. “I’m not perfect, Draco. Far from it. I have my faults - but that’s part of being human; working on those parts of ourselves that we don’t want to be.”

Anna gestured to Boudica, who solemnly strode to Anna’s side.

“You’re right. It’s not my job to fix you. It’s yours.”

And with Boudica by her side, she walked away - tears welling up in her eyes for the boy she thought had changed.

But how could she have expected him to change - over some stupid remark he said about her dead foster family?

Because in the end, she was just Anna.

And she didn’t mean anything to him.
