The first thing that I did was dye my hair.
I probably should have gone to the flat first, gotten setlled in. I was swaying slightly becuase I can't sleep on moving things, and the plane was everywhere, so I was more than a little bit jet-lagged. But I just left my luggage in the car I'd rented at the airport, a Neon that I knew I would need to replace later becuase I hated it, and then went to the first salon I could find.
It was cute little place called Sandras Cuts and when I went in a tall blonde lady smiled at me widely. "Why hello there!" She had and her accent was thick. "What can I do for you today?"
I hadn't planned that far ahead. All I really knew was that I wanted to look different. I made a split second decision and said, "I want to dye my hair and get extensions."
"Okay," she nodded, flipping through a book that I assumed had appointments written down. "We can fit you in with Danny now. Danny!" A slender men walked out of back room. He had dark, carefully gelled back hair and pretty ice blue eyes that cut into me the moment I looked at him. Those were eyes that could put up a fight with Dereks. Except Derek's would win by a long slide.
"Yes, Sasha?" Danny asked.
"This lady here wants extensions and-"
"Oh dear!" He exclaimed when he saw me. He walked up to me and circled me like a hawk, then picked up a strang of my auburn hair and let out a shocked sob sound. "This is tragic. No wonder you came in." He grabbed my arm and began to drag me over to a chair, "Ill take care of her Sasha you don't worry bout a thing!"
"Okay," Sasha called.
He pushed me down in the chair. "What's your name?" he asked. He had one of those voices. You know, the ones where you can just tell that they're not straight? I was okay with it though. I love gay people. Most of the time they're way better than straight people, and this one seemed funny. Most were.
"Karly," I answered, looking at my myself in the mirror that was in front of me. My hair did look tragic. It was stringy, and the pretty aubern shine had been replaced by a weird dark red/brownish thing that had..maybe a hint of orange? I don't know. It looked a little greasy at the top, and I thought back to when I'd last washed it, gave up when I couldn't remember. My face looked bad too. I had huge black cirlces under my eyes and was pale from lack of sleep, and my blue eyes were already closing slighty. "Will you please...fix me?" I asked.
He laughed. "Of course, darlin. First things first though, we gotta get you conditioned and shampooed." He wrapped a soft towel around my neck and slowly leaned it back and pulled my hair behind him so that it rested limp in a black sink. The water turned on, and when it touched my scalp it was warm and comforting. He started to shampoo it, talking to me as he did. "You're hair could be so pretty, you know. It had that unique color to it. You just got to make sure that you taking care of this beauty of yours instead of messing around in the grease, you got it?"
He finsished shampooing and rinsed my hair off, then conditioned it. His hands my cirlces on my scalp and I let out a small sound of joy, because it felt so good. When he was done he wrapped the towel a little tighter around my neck and told me to stand up and walk back to the chair I was in before while he went to go get some of his product.
When he got back, his arms were full of brushes, hair dryers, and other stuff I don't know the name for. "Okay," he said, sighing. "What color do you want?" He gasped, "You would look so good blonde!"
I quicky shook my head no."I've never really been a blonde," I said.
He whined. "Oh, please? It's look so much better on you than brown! We could even incorporant some of your old color into it."
"No, I really just kinda want bro-"
"Girl, I refuse to dye that pretty head of yours brown. Brown is a beautiful color, and it looks amazing on some people, escpeically when they got the hair for it, but you are not a brunnette. I refuse."
"What do you have against brunnettes?" I asked.
"Nothing! Well...some of the time they don't have the right color. Like those girls who are half blonde half brown? Uhm, no. Just.....I can't. If they all brunnete, and a pretty dark color then yeah, it looks good, but not on you. You don't got the eyes for it."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Your eyes are too bright. If you wanna go brown you gotta have-"
"You know what?" I said. "Just..." and then I got the idea. I reached into my back pocket and pulled out the picture of Cody that I carried everywhere. It was just him, we had been at the park and he was laughing. It was perfect. I pointed at his hair, dark, shaggy blonde, and said, "Could you do his color?"
He nodded firecly, "Now that is a head of hair! Is he your boyfriend?"
"No," I said, and something about my voice must have said I didn't want to talk about it, because he pushed it no further.
"Alrighty. And how long do you want it? I think we should keep it relativly short."
"Okay," I said. "Just above my breasts maybe?"
"Sure," he said, and got to work.

Three hours later I was pretty again.
My hair was probably the darkest blonde possibe nearing the edge of light brown, just like Cody's. It brought out my eyes, and everytime I looked in the mirror, I saw him, smiling at me, and couldn't help but smile back.
"Your done," he said, standing and admiring his work.
I smiled and hugged him and then said, "Thank you."
"Anytime, Karly."
"How much?" I asked, reaching for my mom's credit card, but he shook his head and said, "First one's free."
I left the shop and walked up to the Neon. I could get a new car tomorrow, I guess. Right now I really just wanted to sleep. I drove to the flat and walked up after parking the Neon in the garage. It was nice, my dad had a pretty decent job, and I threw all of my luggage onto the floor. I didn't really need to shower, and I didn't feel like rummaging through my luggage until i found PJ's, so I just stripped down to my underwear, crawled into the bed, and slept.
