The young brunette sighed, sitting on the wooden gate surrounding her ranch. She began singing softly, a tune she used to sing to a horse she once owned. Day-dreaming of her prince charming who had not come yet, she noticed the sun was setting. Thinking that she could feed the cocoo’s before the sun had set, she walked towards the barn. Malon’s father and Indigo, a man they hired to help out on their ranch, were both out delivering milk to the castle.
Knowing they would not be back until the next morning, Malon decided to take a break from all her chores, wanting a day of peace before going back to working. But that peace was soon to disappear when the sun fully set and the Stalfos began to rise from the ground.
Realizing she wasn’t safe, Malon tried to run inside her house only to be blocked by one of the Stalfos. Knowing she was in danger, Malon picked up a pitchfork that was next to the barn, and she begun to swing it at the Stalfos, trying to fend them off.
She heard a noise behind her and turned to see a large Stalfos swinging its club at her head. Time seemed to move in slow motion when the saw a figure swing a sword at the Stalfos’ head, decapitating it.
As the figure began to attack the other Stalfos, Malon was in awe. She had heard of people who could wield swords, but this person was amazing at it. When all the Stalfos were gone, the figure said in a familiar voice, “We should head inside before more show up.”
Nodding, Malon entered her barn, as it was the closest shelter to them. The man entered behind her, holding a rope that was connected to a horse.
Malon was about to say thank you when she saw the horse in the light of a lantern in the barn. “T-That’s Epona!” She cried, swinging her arms around her old horse.
She turned toward the man, wondering how he had obtained her beloved horse when she noticed his pointed ears and green cap. “You’re that fairy boy! You kept your promise!”
The boy smiled sheepishly, “Actually it was Epona who brought me here. She must have heard you singing, because she just suddenly started sprinting towards your ranch.”
“Well, it was perfect timing, Fairy Boy.”
“My name is Link, not Fairy Boy.” The boy said. No, not boy anymore. Malon thought as she took in Link. Malon the shook her head, trying to get that thought out of her head.
She looked at Link again and saw blood on his arm. “You’re bleeding! Here, let me help.” Malon didn’t let the boy answer before she had him seated on a stool and she was bandaging his arm up.
When she was finished she looked at Link and asked, “What were you doing ridding though Hyrule Field?”
“I was looking for a friend I lost. Do you remember that fairy I had with me when we first met? She is missing and I am going to look in the Lost Woods for her.”
Malon’s eyes widened at the mention of the Lost Woods, “The Lost Woods? That fairy must mean a lot to you.”
Link smiled and rubbed the back of his next, “She helped me on my journey. I really want to find her.”
Link looked out a small window in the barn, noticing it was day, he said, “I should get going, I want to get there by tomorrow night.”
Malon sighed, “Wait! Why so soon?”
Link looked at Malon, startled by her outburst, “What do you mean?”
“O-oh… I mean, seven years ago you promised to come back and you never did. I don’t want to wait another seven years to see you again…”
Link smiled and stood up, “This time I promise you this; I will come back before one year and visit you, whether or not I find Navi.”
“Alright. One year. That’s it though. It gets lonely here.”
Link smiled and got onto Epona, “It’s a promise.”
Link then rode off towards the Lost Woods, and Malon was standing at the entrance of Lon Lon Ranch. The girl said to herself as she went to feed the cocoo’s, “It’s a promise. And you can’t break a promise.”
