"Merlin for the love of Camelot stop whining." Arthur yells for the millionth time that trip.
"The sun is setting and we still haven't set up camp. Unlike you I don't have layers upon layers of winter clothes. I would very much like a fire to stop me freezing to death."
Arthur turned in his saddle and was shocked to see Merlin's lips tinged with blue and him shaking vigorously.
"Okay okay we will rest. Set up camp here." The Knights dismounted and Merlin ran around collecting wood.
He set the branches in a suitable area, eyes flashing gold to create a crackling fire. The warlock muttered a spell under his breath and part of the flame broke of and sunk into his skin. He sighed in contempt as a wave of warmth surged through him.
"Better?" Arthur quipped.
"Much." Merlin said with a smile, laying back so his head rested on his bed roll. He gazed up at the stars starting to peek through the fading blue sky, painted with streaks of orange and pink clouds.
Wind whispered through the trees toying with the flames, making them spit and bite. Without realising, Merlin formed the stray embers into a small dragon that flew around the camp. The Knights watched in awe, amazed how Merlin could create such beauty without even uttering a word.
The dragon disintegrated as a branch cracked in the distance. Merlin shot up, eyes glowing a dangerous gold and fists balled ready to strike.
"Merlin what gotten- look out!" Merlin dived away just in time. An arrow lodged itself into a tree, sending splinter flying in all directions.
The warlock held out his hand and three mercenaries came barreling through the brush against their will.
"Who are you?" Merlin asked, voice scarily calm. When no answer came Merlin slowly clenched his hand, cutting of their oxygen slowly. The woods were filled with the horrifying chokes of the mercenaries until one of them screamed a name Merlin hoped never to hear again.
"Wyatt sent us!"
Fear crept over the warlock, sneaking up on him and smothering him until he felt unable to breathe. In one cruel sweep the men's bodies dropped to the floor, cold and lifeless. Merlin followed suit, crashing to his knees feeling an overwhelming sense of panic surge through him.
'Wyatt knows where I am. After all these years he has found me.' His head throbbed to the point his magic was craving release. The simplest touch from Arthur made him explode.
Trees bowed to his power, cracking the earth with sprays of mud and dust. The formerly clear night sky was now smothered in dark storm clouds. The cracking of lightening could be heard, a defeating sound that shook the earth to its core. In the center of it all was Merlin, surrounded by tendrils of gold that clawed at his skin like talons. His eyes resembled that of the sun, completely golden with tiny flares of magic appearing every so often.
Arthur was terrified at the display of such raw power from his usually docile friend. More so than that he was worried. Never has he felt such unadulterated fear radiate from a person before. It was heartbreaking.
Despite his initial fear Arthur fought his way in front of the boy and knelt down. He focused on the gold of his eyes, ignoring the burning sensation in his hands as the snakes of gold wrapped round his wrists.
