"Wait, what?" Sam scrunches his face as soon as I finish my sentence, "He took you where?"

Sammy, Mallory, and I are sitting in my family room watching TV. Well we were watching TV - now we're talking about how my date with Jack went.

"To the lake." I repeat, furrowing my eyebrows, "Why? Is that a problem?" I'm confused.

Sammy tenses next to me and I frown. Something's obviously wrong. Was the lake not a good place for a date? Was it just a place Jack took his 'fuck buddies'? I should've asked him what we are, I still don't know.

"No," Sam pauses, "There's no problem..." He sucks at lying.

    "Tell me." I demand.

"It's nothing, I swear." Sammy fakes a smile.

    "Sam..." I start.

"I should start heading home, Mom wants me to have dinner at my place tonight."

Without evening giving me and Mal a chance to say goodbye, Sammy's pushing himself out the front door.

"What was the about?" I wonder aloud.

Mallory looks just as stunned as me, "I have no idea; I know for a fact his mom would've been fine with him having dinner here," She says, "Especially since the other guys are coming over to eat too."

"Was it something I said?" I ask. Maybe I put too much details in my story. I probably shouldn't have mentioned the part about the make out session. That was stupid of me, why would Sam want to here about his best friend getting action while he was at home all by himself? I'm so inconsiderate. This is just like that time with Nate.

"No, it was probably something personal going on with him." Mallory assures me, "We can talk to him about it later, after dinner."

I want to talk about it with him right now, but considering I never say the right thing maybe I should just leave him alone. I'd only make things worse.

"Johnson just texted, they're almost here." Mallory beams, "This will sort of be like a double date, now that Sam's not here fifth wheeling." She jokes, but I don't laugh. Something in my heart sinks at the thought of Sammy being by himself while everyone else is at my house for dinner.

Right before I can reach for my phone to text him to come back, my dad makes his presence known by calling us into the kitchen. Looks like me consoling Sam will have to wait until after dinner. Hopefully he doesn't get himself into to much trouble by then.
