We headed into Laketown in secret and we were dressed and fed his girls were very hospitable but Thorin was sitting looking out the window at something.
"What are you looking at?" I asked and sat next to him seeing a weird crossbow like machine.
“A Dwarvish Wind-Lance.”He replied and Bilbo walked over.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Bilbo inferred.
“He has. The last time we saw such a weapon, a city was on fire. It was the day the dragon came." Balin said sadly and began to tell the story. "The day that Smaug destroyed Dale. Girion, the Lord of the city, rallied his bowman to fire upon the beast. But a dragon’s hide is tough, tougher than the strongest armor. Only a black arrow, fired from a wind-lance, could have pierced the dragon’s hide, and few of those arrows were ever made. His store was running low when Girion made his last stand.”
“Had the aim of Men been true that day, much would have been different.” Thorin said and I was saddened by it too.
“You speak as if you were there.”Bard said walking over.
“All dwarves know the tale.”Thorin replied and Bard's son Bain walked over.
“Then you would know that Girion hit the dragon. He loosened a scale under the left wing. One more shot and he would have killed the beast.”Bain said sticking up for his father.
“Ha ha ha! That’s a fairy story, lad. Nothing more.”Dwalin replied to the boy.
“You took our money. Where are the weapons?” Thorin asked we needed more than what we had already I couldn't retrieve everything fro Thranduil's armory.
“Wait here.”Bard said and came back with lackluster makeshift weapons.
“Tomorrow begins the last days of autumn.” Thorin said seeming worrysome.
“Durin’s Day falls morn after next. We must reach the mountain before then.”Balin said.
“And if we do not? If we fail to find the hidden door before that time?”Kili asked.
“Then this quest has been for nothing.”Fili replied dejectedly.
“Thorin.” Why not take what’s been offered and go? I’ve made do with less; so have you. I say we leave now.” Balin said to him.
"He may be right Thorin." I replied putting a hand on his shoulder. My beloved looked at me.
“You’re not going anywhere.”Bard said.
“What did you say!?”Dwalin was outraged.
“There’s spies watching this house and probably every dock and wharf in the town. You must wait till nightfall.” Bard said but I knew Thorin had a plan to take weapons from the armory in Laketown. On the other hand Bard was thinking of something and ran out. When night came we headed to the armory. We climbed into the armory. But we were quickly caught by the guards of laketown and dragged towards the Master of Laketown's mansion.
“Get off of me!” Dwalin griped as the master of Laketown walked out.
“What is the meaning of this?”The Master asked.
“We caught ‘em stealing weapons, sire.”The Guard replied.
“Ah. Enemies of the state, then.”
“This is a bunch of mercenaries if ever there was, sire. Except perhaps for the girl.” His creepy councellor saida nd I shivered.
“Hold your tongue. You do not know to whom you speak. This is no common criminal; this is Thorin, son of Thrain, son of Thror!” Dwalin exclaimed and the townspeople were shocked.
“We are the dwarves of Erebor.” Thorin said. “We have come to reclaim our homeland. I remember this town and the great days of old. Fleets of boats lay at harbor, filled with silks and fine gems. This was no forsaken town on a lake! This was the center of all trade in the North. I would see those days return. I would relight the great forges of the dwarves and send wealth and riches flowing once more from the halls of Erebor!” The people began to cheer and then Bard walked up.
“Death! That is what you will bring upon us. Dragon-fire and ruin. If you awaken that beast, it will destroy us all.” Bard said and there began the discord.
“You can listen to this naysayer, but I promise you this; If we succeed, all will share in the wealth of the mountain. You will have enough gold to rebuild Esgaroth ten times over!”Thorin exclaimed and the people cheered.
“All of you! Listen to me! You must listen! Have you forgotten what happened to Dale?!” Have you forgotten those who died in the firestorm?! And for what purpose? The blind ambition of a mountain-king so riven by greed, he could not see beyond his own desire!” The people were scared by what Bard had said and I was too.
“Now, now, we must not, any of us, be too quick to lay blame. Let us not forget that it was Girion, Lord of Dale, your ancestor, who failed to kill the beast!” The Master said and the people started to boo at Bard.
“It’s true, sire. We all know the story: arrow after arrow he shot, each one missing its mark.”Alfrid griped and Bard looked at us.
“You have no right, no right to enter that mountain!” Bard said to Thorin and he approached him.
“I have the only right.” Thorin growled. “I speak to the Master of the men of the Lake. Will you see the prophecy fulfilled? Will you share in the great wealth of our people? What say you?” The people cheered and we looked at the master.
“I say unto you...welcome! Welcome and thrice welcome, King under the Mountain!”The Master said and we were invited into his mansion for a feast.
