Something Stupid

As I move around the kitchen, the sound of children’s music blasts from the TV, Lacey bouncing along to the song, completely infatuated in the show she’s watching. My hands are covered in spices and the smell of chicken, already set in the oven to bake. I found myself dancing to the little tune and felt a little nudge against my calf, turning to see my daughter standing there, dancing along with me. We continued until a sudden change made me look up and caused Lacey to cry.

When I looked up Liam was taking his place on the couch, the remote in his hand and his eyes glued to the TV, the latest Batman movie playing. My heart raced with anger as I walked over to him, snatching the remote back and turning it to Lacey’s show.

“I was watching that.” Liam stood, his fist balled up. He didn’t usually get mad easily. Then again, we didn’t usually fight.

Suddenly he jerked the remote from my hand again, flipping the stations with a violent finger. “There are three TV’s in this house and you have to choose the one your daughter is watching to hog.” I replied, bouncing Lacey on my hip as I tried to calm her.

Still Liam got louder, nearly scaring the both of us. “I want one thing and I can’t have it! All I want is to watch my movie on the good TV and I can’t even have that!” He screamed, never giving me a chance to reply, storming to our bedroom and slamming the door so that it sounded as if thunder struck.

He never emerged, even for dinner. Lacey and I ate along. She didn’t even dance again once I turned her show on, both of our moods ruined. After I’d tucked her in, rocking her to sleep for the night I headed into our room, anticipating the possible fight that was ahead of me.

It was quiet as I entered, Liam laid curled on his side of the bed, facing the window. I crawled in, keeping to my side for a moment before I moved to him, my arms snaking around his waist and my face nuzzling his shoulder. “I’m sorry.” I whispered against his skin, pulling him tighter against me.

I felt him relax and when he rolled over to face me he was smile, almost laughing. “Why are we fighting over this?” He asked, making me giggle a little over the stupidity of out argument.

With both of us laughing a little he looked at me. “You’re a good mum. I think we need a mini holiday though. Let’s go somewhere.” He looked down at me.

As much as I didn’t want to be away from Lacey I knew he was right. The pressures of parenting had taken it’s toll on the both of us and was now showing it could take a toll on our relationship. We needed a short break. We needed each other.
