From the time my foot stepped into this room, it was easy to grasp now how this situation had unfolded. His presence weakened everything around him. It crept up on me as I approached it. Was that how he had gained influence over all of these men, to the point of fanatical belief? This power that he had did it seep into their minds and made them fanatical to him? He was almost like a parasite feeding on those around him while doing nothing in return—this tick, this politic.
His time had come. Flashes of my struggle passed my mind at I looked at his grotesque body. When the country needed him the most, what did he do? Nothing. When Cassis raided the poor, what did he say to those struggling for nothing? When my mother needed help with medical bills that were far too impossible to pay did he say anything? No, nothing at all. Martini crossed my mind for a moment, and I remembered her own job. The sick and the starving. How many lives had been destroyed because of this man who did nothing? He would get no pity from me as I took in my surroundings, making sure no final traps could be sprung.
He kept up a bravado of words and dialogue that only continued to spew my disregard towards the man. My first time meeting him, I knew exactly what kind of person he was.
A yes man, no drive, no direction, and no goals. The best person you want as a puppet when you meddled with the election time and time again and spew nonsense on the TV.
He had hoped to keep me in dialogue to bait me out, but he was mistaken. My hand rushed to what looked like its mouth with such force that it exploded, causing the undigested remains to spew out.
"Wait, Domenic, we're on the same side, we are both the same," his body squirming back as his elongated hands were dropping and falling off. He was struggling to recover from the shock.
"No, we are not, how many lives have you saved mayor?"
"Why? Why must I die?"
"Shut up!"
My hands reached to where I believed his heart to be, ripping it out. There was a crunching noise as green pus oozed everywhere. It was followed by a pungent odour that took the room. What seemed like the last puffs of life coming from this plant man, it created a yellow mist in the air, which looked similar to pollen. I watched his hands, seemingly shrivelled as the final puff was made.
This was far easier than it should be, looking down at his lifeless body. Even in death, you were pretty worthless. A tinge of pain hit me as my face convulsed, was my body absorbing him? I wasn't too sure of anything at the moment.
Thum!
Thum!
Thum!
Footsteps!
My eyes turned to the direction to see Samael. He was filled with anger and beside him was the young man from earlier.
"You killed him already?"
"Did I have to wait for you to give me the okay? You do what you want, so why are you bothered if I do what I want too?"
Outside the freaks were still snarling, probably at him. The young man seemed scared as he stood by Samael. He eased forward before running towards me.
"Wait, you little fool," he said to him.
The yellow mist in the room swirled before rushing directly at the young man. It knocked him back towards a closet.
What was going on?
Samael attacked him first with a kick without any regard which the young man blocked with ease.
How?
Then I heard laughter coming from the young man. It was a burst of sickish laughter that didn't seem like his own personality at all, it wasn't out of fear. We both had our eyes fixed on him as he slowly stood up, inspecting himself.
"So you managed to see through me. Leave we have no reason to fight. I don't hate either of you." He looked at Samael before he muttered a name under breath the name I did not make out. "Why are you here?"
"For my own purpose, Samael trailed off," I have so many names that I don't even know who I am myself."
"Look all I want is to be left alone to keep to myself, I had my batch of humans and I am sure you can have your own somewhere else. His hand ran across his face as he looked at me. "That isn't too much to ask for?"
"Sorry, but you're my ticket to freedom, and you're not going anywhere. Stay still and it will be quick squirm around and it won't be." Samael said as he positioned himself closer.
The young man's feet stepped forward, resting on the plant it seemed to breathe new life into it as the colors started to return. Samael charged forward in attack. Behind me, I heard the plant rising again. The part that I had knocked off was also regrown.
"At one point. I might have been afraid of you but not anymore."
Samael jeered, "I see then I will have to teach you to fear again."
"Domenic you can still leave now, it's not too late. I haven't gotten serious yet."
"I am not going anywhere."
The plant behind me rattled. It rushed me, but it, however, was no match for my speed as I dodged it. I came to the realization that the room was slowly turning green.
Plants seem to be springing from everywhere, covering the walls and the bed. Soon enough they would be nowhere else for me to land, and it seemed to be aiming to cover the door.
"It's not too late, leave!"
The carnivorous plant spat what I perceived was saliva. It landed on the floor, burning the green leaves to nothing but ash. Then I felt that sensation I got from the beginning again. We were being weakened was it to do with the pollen lingering in the air? Each time Samael would knock him down to the point of death, the plants would touch him and he would rise again like a punching bag.
Something more had to be going on here but what the hell was it? If he was so powerful. Why did he feel the need to tell us each time he got up for us to leave? I was weakening, getting sluggish, not noticeable, but it was there bit by bit. That fool Samael hasn't even noticed anything as he kept hitting him over and over .If he missed and knocked a piece of the wall instead it seemed like the leaves would respond almost immediately to it and plug in the hole. Was it to keep in the scent? Strangely the door was still not covered as I swayed left to right dodging these spit bombs. It dawned on me when Samael was about to miss and instead he of dodging he allowed him to take him. Was he protecting something that was behind the wall?
This plant wasn't his body, it seemed to be an extension of his mouth somehow, and his real body was probably behind that wall. Yes, that would have to be it right? That is why he wanted us to leave so badly, it wasn't that he couldn't take us given time. He was in a bad position to fight both of us at the same time. There was nothing to lose if I was wrong.
I smiled as I waited and time myself for when Samael had him distracted to launch myself directly at the wall. My body connected with it like a battering ram, sending vines and grass scurrying out of the way as I entered the next room. In this room compared to last was a different plant. It seemed to be pulsing or beating like a human heart. From the other room, an agonizing scream raked my ears.
"This was it, this was what he was trying to hide from me."
I ran my hand through it and my body convulsed as it felt overwhelmed like an electric shock, the surrounding plants were trashing as if drowning in an ocean only they saw. My body felt stuck for a while as whatever inside was sucked inside me. In the corner of my eye, Samael was watching me. Was he planning to strike me down now that I was vulnerable and unable to move?
He did not approach too close.
"How do you feel now, Domenic, powerful?"
"I feel as if my body is being assaulted."
"It will be over soon."
Another person appeared beside him with a smile on her face.
Her wings showed before her three heads, Enêpsigos.
She gazed at the body of the young boy and then at the body of the mayor.
"Well done, Domenic."
