I left Harry, Ron and Hermione at the train station, where a giant man named Hagrid came to bring me to Hogwarts separately. I was the first student in the castle.
Hagrid left me in a wide hallway, telling me that the Great Hall was just behind the two gigantic doors facing me and that I had to wait there.
So I waited, quite anxious about what was going to happen (I knew I had to stood in front of the whole school to be sorted). But I wasn't going to let my nerves get the best of me.
I lowered my hand next to the pocket in my robe, feeling my wand through the fabric, which made me feel a bit better. Holding my wand reminded me of my ancestor and gave my the strength and assurance I needed.
On the day I received my wand, Ollivander told me he had created the wand just for me, Slytherin's heir. Indeed, Salazar Slytherin made his own wand, using snakewood and basilisk horn. Ollivander had tried to copy the wand the best he could, but I could feel just by holding it that there was something missing. I sighed, thinking that even if it was not perfect, this wand suited me.
I could now hear students coming in the Great Hall, chatting and laughing with each other. The room was soon filled with joyous sounds.
I tried to distract myself from what was happening in the Great Hall by looking at the paintings in the waiting room. They all seemed to be alive, interacting with each other and switching places. I smiled, enjoying their conversations and their friendly bickering.
I was just about to start a conversation with a beautiful witch painted on a gloomy background when I bumped into someone coming from around the corner of the room.
- "Ow! Watch where you're going!" I exclaimed, annoyed.
In front of me stood a boy in his robes, wearing a Slytherin tie. The boy was a bit taller than me, he had light blond hair and a thin face... And he was looking at me with raging eyes.
- "You should be the one to watch out!" he spat angrily.
- "No," I argued. I was right and I knew it. "it was your fault." I replied, looking at him directly in the eyes.
- "How dare you speak to me like that ? You obviously don't know who I am." he uttered slowly, taking a step further and now looking down on me.
- "I couldn't care less." I said defyingly, also taking a step further.
- "You don't know what you're saying. This could have consequences you know. My father is a very important man in the Ministry." he threatened.
- "Oh yeah ?" I started sarcastically, "I'm so scared !" I started laughing, he couldn't know how important my family was, but I knew I was more powerful than him. He started to make his way towards the doors.
- "You're going to regret that." he added, before leaving.
- "Don't be so sure." I answered, still laughing.
Who did this boy think he was ? He was about my age, and nothing seemed so special about him. I was more shocked than angry, as I couldn't believe his attitude.
A few minutes later, a slim and imposing witch came for me. She introduced herself as Professor McGonagall and asked me to follow her to the Great Hall. As I entered the room by the side door, Professor Dumbledore was giving a speech.
- "Right, so before we start the usual Sorting Ceremony, there is a new student who needs to be sorted." he declared, then he looked my way, gesturing me to come down at the front with him "Please welcome Y/N Chase."
I don't know if anyone made a sound, all I could hear was my blood pulsing in my hears.
I looked up to the tables filled with students, all smiling. I glanced over the Gryffindor table, where I spotted Hermione and Harry who waved to me, both of them grinning widely.
As I looked back to the center of the room, my eyes came across a boy at the Hufflepuff table. I couldn't help but notice that he was staring right at me, and that he was extremely gorgeous. Our eyes met, and I glanced away before my cheeks could turn red.
"Now dear," said Dumbledore, "sit down and you will be sorted." he pointed the chair in front of him.
McGonagall pulled out an odd looking hat from behind the headmaster, and put it directly on my head. The hat suddenly began speaking, making me jump a little, which no one noticed, expect for the Hufflepuff who was still staring at me, now grinning cheekily.
- "Well... Y/N Slytherin..." the hat began in a low voice, I looked at the students, hoping no one could hear, but they didn't seem to react, I relaxed a little
"I knew we would meet one day. You must have already guessed which house you'll be in, right?" he asked, I discretely nodded "It's a shame, you could have made a great Gryffindor, you know..."
I swallowed slowly, cursing my name and my family for taking away the very few friendly acquaintances I had. I was not blind, I could see that Slytherins rarely befriended other houses. I took a big breath, prepared for what was coming.
- "Slytherin !" the hat announced to the assembly.
The whole school clapped politely, except the Slytherins who seemed thrilled. As I looked at their smiling faces, joining them did not seem so bad anymore.
I gave a quick glance towards the Gryffindor table, and I saw that Ron and Hermione were smiling, although they seemed a bit disappointed. Harry, however, did not seem surprised at all. I shot them an apologetic smile which they returned with their thumbs up, as if to say "we don't care, you got this". But maybe it was all in my head.
I got up, and started to make my way to the Slytherin table where everyone was cheering. Everyone, excluding the boy from the hallway.
