I had decided to follow Blaise's advice and to make my housemates like me, or, at least, not kill me.
The following day, I had my first class of Defence Against the Dark Arts, with professor Moody. I entered the class a bit early, so I could choose where to sit. I knew that I shared this class with Harry, Ron and Hermione, but I had to sit with the Slytherins. So when Ron entered the room, I quickly grabbed him by the arm.
- "I can't sit with you guys today, I'm sorry. I'll explain later." I whispered.
He nodded, then chose a spot next to one of the very few windows, at the opposite of the classroom. A few moments later, Pansy arrived, followed by Daphne and Blaise. I shyly approached their table.
- "Hey, hum... Can I sit with you ?" I asked.
Before Pansy could respond, Blaise spoke up for the group.
- "Of course ! Here, take a sit." he pointed at the chair between him and Pansy.
Pansy rolled her eyes, but was immediately distracted by Draco's arrival. He was, as usual, followed by Crabbe and Goyle, looking more brainless and pathetic than ever.
- "Already sick of your Gryffindor friends, Chase ?" Malfoy asked, falsely amused.
- "Erm... I decided it was time for me to be true to my house." I answered, half sincerely.
They all seemed to buy it, because Pansy and Daphne nodded to each other, and started to speak to me. Malfoy, however scoffed and rolled his eyes.
- "What do you think about Professor Moody ?" Daphne asked to the group.
- "I can't believe a man like him is going to teach us classes." Malfoy replied, revolted, "Wait until my father hears about this."
- "He's repulsing." Pansy added, "I mean, have you seen him ? I can't even look at his face, it's despicable!" she explained, with a disgusted sneer.
That was it, this was my time to shine.
- "Oh I disagree," I said lightly, "I think he's quite sexy." a mocking grin settled on my face.
They all looked at me incredulous eyes, and I had to stare at Blaise with pleading eyes to save my skin.
- "Oh yeah!" he agreed with a grin, "I would definitely tap that."
They all started laughing, and I thanked Blaise with my eyes.
- "Very good one Chase." Pansy said.
I sighed with relief. I was accepted.
Malfoy was suspiciously staring at me, but I didn't care.
I stared back with a disapproving smirk, showing him that I wasn't doing it for him. His eyes got cold and stern as he mouthed "Fuck you.", to which I answered by raising my middle finger to him, before getting back to gossiping with Pansy.
Professor Moody arrived a few minutes later, and began his lesson.
It was the most terrifying and scarring class we had ever attended.
The professor taught us the three Unforgivable curses, using them without an ounce of remorse or hesitation. For each curse, he gave an example, targeting a specific student in the classroom. We exchanged horrified looks between us, and I saw Hermione giving me a scared look from across the room.
At one point, he was demonstrating the Cruciatus curse in front of Neville, whose parents (I learned later) were tortured and had gone mad because of it. Hermione, completely distraught, interfered before Neville could lose his temper.
Everyone was so shocked that even the Slytherins, who usually never missed a chance to humiliate Neville or the other houses, did not say a word.
I got out of the classroom with the Slytherins, stunned and overwhelmed. Before splitting up to get to our next classes, we lingered for a bit in the hallway. None of us dared to speak, even Malfoy had shut his mouth for once. Finally, I decided to speak up.
- "Are Defence Against the dark Arts classes usually like this ?" I asked, shyly.
They all shook their heads, and I understood that what we had witnessed was not normal. We finally parted, and Daphne and Goyle came with me to Charms. At least, we now had something common to bond over.
--------------
At the end of the day when I got to the Slytherin common room after dinner (I had stayed a bit longer to explain myself to Harry, Ron and Hermione), everything had seemed to be back to normal.
Pansy was chatting with Daphne, Blaise and a third year whose name I couldn't remember, while Draco Malfoy was lazily stretched out on the couch, Crabbe and Goyle awkwardly sitting on two armchairs next to him.
I made my way over Pansy and Daphne, I had something planned inside my head.
- "Hey Pansy." I started
- "Yeah ?" she encouraged me, I couldn't tell if she liked me or not, considering the rough start we'd had.
- "I was thinking that you and Daphne probably know all the gossip and rumours running around Hogwarts. And, since I'm new, I was wondering if you could maybe keep up to date." I tried with a friendly smile.
She exchanged a long look with Daphne I couldn't quite understand, and then turned to me with a large smile.
- "This is going to be so fun. Trust me, you are in the best of hands." she replied, excitedly.
She and Daphne both took my hands and lead me towards the stairs. I exchanged a look with Blaise, who was raising his thumbs.
We crossed the common room, walking past the couch on which Draco Malfoy was. He raised his eyebrows, looking surprised to see us together.
- "Trying to make friends, Chase ?" he said, provocatively.
- "Your fly is open, Malfoy." I shot back in the same tone.
He quickly checked if it was true, but when he realised I was just playing with him, I was already gone.
------------
- "Okay, so the most attractive boys in Slytherin are Draco... Blaise, Friedrich is okay... and Nathaniel." Daphne listed.
We had been chatting for about an hour, and I was now aware of every relationship and fight between students (and professors).
- "But Draco is mine." Pansy added, giggling.
- "Right, don't worry about that. I won't be stealing him from you." I replied with a sigh.
- "You should be nicer to him you know." she said with caring eyes.
- "Why should I? He's not being particularly nice to me either." I told her.
- "You don't understand, he has standards to meet." she explained.
- "What do you mean?" I asked.
- "He doesn't want to disappoint his family." Daphne resplied.
- "I'm not sure is family would want him to insult every other wizard and treat people like dirt." I argued.
- "Never mind." Pansy changed the subject, "Is there anyone who has caught your eye?" she asked, cheekily.
- "Not really, no. Although I have to admit, I think Cedric Diggory is quite attractive." I confessed.
We all giggled and continued with our talk. I smiled happily, knowing that this year wasn't going to be so bad after all.
