Chapter Four: Defense Against Umbridge
The weekend had gone by with a breeze, at least according to Eleanor. However, the same wasn't said for Harry. Harry had spoken to Eleanor about the stares he was getting, more than usual and most of them weren't friendly. It was true that a lot of the students and their parents didn't believe in the fact that Voldemort could be back. Eleanor's father had explained that the fear of Voldemort returning scared people the most. The thought of losing everything that they had built, terrified them. This lead many to not to believe Harry or Dumbledore's claim of the Dark Lord returning. Evelyn had made it very clear to Eleanor, not to openly speak about this issue, but know that the truth always comes out. Eleanor also made it her mission to make sure Harry wouldn't feel isolated.
Already dressed and having just finished breakfast, the lot of them made their way towards their Defense Against the Dark Arts. Harry walked ahead of the everyone, as Eleanor stuck towards Hermione and Ron. Making their way into the classroom, the other students were trying to hit a flying plane. Eleanor looked to her right, to see Draco Malfoy already staring back at her. Eleanor gave him a quick smile, before taking a seat in the front with Hermione sliding in next to her.
Truth be told they had no clue to what expect from Umbridge teaching the class, and from what Hermione understood, the Ministry was keeping track of what was happening at Hogwarts now. The flying paper was now burned, as Umbridge made her way down the stairs. The words O.W.L.S. appeared on the chalkboard.
"Good morning, children. Ordinary Wizarding Level examinations. O-W-Ls. More commonly known as OWLs. Study hard and you will be rewarded. Fail to do so, and the consequences may be severe. Your previous instruction in this subject has been disturbingly uneven. But you'll be pleased to know, from now on... you will be following a carefully structured, Ministry-approved... course of defensive magic." Eleanor was starting to dislike the high pitched voice of Umbridge. Next to her, Hermione raised her hand. "Yes?"
"There's nothing in here about using defensive spells?" Hermione looked through the books that were passed out. Eleanor looked through, it felt like a book she would've read during her first year or even before that, Defense Against the Dark Art, Basic for Beginners.
"Using spells? Well, I can't imagine why you would need to use spells in my classroom." Eleanor, now, stared at the lady in utter confusion.
"We're not gonna use magic?" Eleanor asked, looking up at the lady dressed in pink.
"You'll be learning about defensive spells in a secure, risk-free way." Umbridge smiled at Eleanor, before replying.
"But professor-" Eleanor was quickly interrupted by Harry.
"What use is that? If we're attacked, it won't be risk-free." Umbridge scowled at Harry before turning around and speaking sharply.
"Students will raise their hands when they speak in my class." Umbridge took a sharp breath before continuing. "It is the view of the Ministry... that a theoretical knowledge will be sufficient... to get you through your examinations... which, after all, is what school is all about."
"And how's theory supposed to prepare us for what's out there?" Harry asked once more.
"There is nothing out there, dear. Who do you imagine wants to attack children like yourself?"
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe Lord Voldemort." The name hit a nerve in the classroom considering it went completely quiet. So quiet, a needle could drop and it would be the loudest noise in the room. Many students were facing Harry, however, many were looking down at their desk, such as Draco Malfoy and many of the Slytherins. They knew the truth, especially Draco. Eleanor took a deep breath, before looking towards Harry, a sympathetic look painted across her face.
"Now, let me make this quite plain. You have been told that a certain dark wizard is at large once again. This is a lie." Umbridge spoke quietly, but the tone seemed to alert the goosebumps on the back of Eleanor's neck.
By the end of class, Eleanor had already had enough. Harry had been given detention after going back and forth with Umbridge, as well as bringing up Cedric Diggory's death. Eleanor, Harry, Ron, and Hermione all walked out of the class quietly. No one dared to mentioned what had just happened.
That night, Eleanor stayed in the Ravenclaw Common Room, sitting at a round table with Anthony Goldstein and Cho Chang. Cho Chang had been the second person Eleanor had met at Hogwarts and was a great friend. Eleanor was Cho's support system, and spent majority of the end of last school year sleeping with Eleanor. Some of the other upper student came and asked what had happened in Umbridge class, and Eleanor showed them the book they had gotten. Majority of the Ravenclaw students had gathered around the table discussing how it was unethical of Umbridge to not allow them to be fully educated.
Eleanor went to bed early knowing that she had Potions in the next morning. She knew that it was important that she got good scores for her O.W.L.S, so that she can become a healer. Eleanor loved to help people.
Laying down in her bed, Eleanor thought about she was even going to survive this year. She's never been in constant danger like Harry, but everything was piling and classes had barely begun. Umbridge really had set the tone for the year, she was partnered with Draco Malfoy, the one person her Mother told her to stay away from, the OWLS, and whatever upcoming war was coming. Eleanor didn't even want to think about the possibilities of what might happen, all she knew was it was nothing good. And those horrid nightmares she continuous received, those were the worst. She hadn't told anyone about the dark corridor and whispering that left her covered in sweat most nights. No one would believe her.
Nala curled up next to the girl, purring as she too, started to fall asleep.
like. comment. share next chapter will have eleanor and draco. i am trying to make this as realistic between two people falling in love, without them rushing into it, so it will be a semi- slow burn. thanks for reading :)
