The New Years Eve. I've always liked this day despite my hate of winter. People always try to come up with some brave resolutions that they quit doing within two weeks.
But that's not what i like about it. It's the feeling of a fresh start, opportunity and something new. Day of chances. The day of new you.
I have this philosophical TEDtalk in my head while I watch my best friend Liz dancing to Closer by The Chainsmokers and getting really close with her new boyfriend.
Liz. Real name Charlotte but she likes being called Liz and it just sticked to her. Her and I have been friends since I was born. We were meant to be friends even before we were born. Our dads met on the first day of university and since that day their bromance started. Thanks to that we became friends for life. Liz was always there for me when I needed it and I was always there for her when she needed me.
She also persuaded me to go to this party in the suburbs of London. I don't know many people here and maybe that's the reason why I am standing in doorway and watch her. It seem like everyone is having fun, maybe too much fun puking in the big pots located in the hall.
All of a sudden I get disstracted from the pukeland by a voice really close to my ear and then I see the source of it.
Harrison Osterfield. Lizes older brother. He says quick hi and takes place on the other side of doorway I'm standing in and looks at me with a grin. I greet him back.
'I didn't think you would be coming to this party,' says the blond guy.
'Oh, really? And why is that?' I say with a sarcastic smirk on my face, 'don't you know that I'm the biggest party animal London has ever seen?'
To be honest, I've never been a fan of these homemade parties, too much weird and drunk people, even more undrinkcable liquids and not to mension couples who make out literaly everywhere.
'Sorry, it completely slipped my mind. What a fool I am.'
I laugh at his answer, 'apology axcepted, but don't you ever make such a mistake again.'
'This won't ever repeat ma'am,' he says while bowing like a peasant.
I'm looking at this scene and it looks really bizare. Harrison and I've known each other for my whole life. Our families are so close, his sister is my best friend and yet we've never had a conversation that had more than few words. He is that kind of a person who you say hi to and ask something family related 'cuz you basicaly live with their family, meet on daily basis and it would be weird just to ignore eachother. So I'm really surprised how easy is for us to joke around despite that.
'So, who are you here with, party animal?' he cuts in my thinking.
'Isn't that obvious?' I say motioning to Liz who is owning the dance floor.
'So, thirdwheeling, huh?' he adds while looking at Lizes boyfriend.
'I was born to do so.' Liz have had couple boyfriends over the years but it has never been so serious with anyone before this Blake guy. She even said she had had finally met her soulmate. I don't really believe in soulmates but I hope they will work out. They seem really happy and in love.
On the other hand Harrison doesn't seem so happy about them. Is he holding himself from being a protective older brother? I have to laugh this scenario. He watches every move they make. It's hillarious.
'Try not to kill him with your stare,' I point out laughingly.
The blond blinks and looks at me with confusion, 'huh? I'm not staring at anyone. I'm just observing.'
'Of course,' I say sarcastically, 'and who are you here with?' I add to change the subject.
'Me? I, I am here with my girlfriend,' he says like he had forgotten about someting really important and found out just now.
'Wow, the famous thief of hearts has settled down. I'm impresses. Where is she? I wanna meet that woman,' I say with ironic excitment.
'I don't kn...' as he starts talking some girl interrups him. She looks straight at Harrison but he doesn't seem like he wants to talk with her. Then she looks at me and back at him questionably.
'Amelie, this is Kate, Lizes best friend. Kate this is Amelie, my girlfriend.' He stubles on the world girlfriend. I don't know why but Amelie doesn't notice it or at least she pretends it. We shake hands, exchange polite smiles and Amelie starts to whisper something to Harrison. While she whispers to him, she keeps looking and pointing at some guy in hall. I've never seen him before.
Harrison looks at him too and his face is full of diffent emotions. First is surprise, then anger mixed with disappointment and the last one looks like he is giving up. He nods and Amelie starts to walk away from us.
'Bye! Have fun and it was nice meeting you Kate,' the girl says with a wave and I return it. She walks out of the house with that guy in the hall. What the hell is going on?
I look over at Harrison. He looks sad, dissapponited and like he just wanted to disapear.
'I'm starving. Don't you wanna grab some food?' I ask after a while.
