Myanmar ranks 94th, China 69th, Bangladesh 120th and Pakistan 169th. The situation in Nepal and Bangladesh remains the same. India has made a minor improvement. Whereas in the neighbouring countries the situation has deteriorated. China has come in a very poor position in this case, from 103 to 69th position.
A recent report by the World Health Organization has raised concerns that the availability and quality of data on suicide and suicide attempts globally is poor. Only 80 member countries have given better data from which suicide rate has been estimated.India is also not serious in providing data, while it is the second largest country in the world by population. There is no clear account of the latest figures or old figures. How will there be prevention in such a question?
Whereas WHO believes that effective prevention and strategy of suicide requires surveillance. International differences in suicide patterns, changes in suicide rates, characteristics and methods, each country can set a concrete goal from their suicide data.
The first WHO World Suicide Report published in 2014 was released for this purpose. In the Mental Health Action Plan 2013-20, WHO member countries have committed to work towards the global goal of reducing the suicide rate in countries by 10 percent by 2020. However it does not appear to happen.
In the Global Burden of Disease Study 1990-2016, there is a lot of ambiguity about suicide deaths among the states of India. In 2016, there were 230,314 suicide deaths in India. If the observed trends continue, then India's chances of achieving the global target have reduced.
