CHAPTER 15
I close my eyes as Allison yells out, covering her ears.
"Vanya's in the room at the end of the hall." Diego states looking down the line at us.
"How do you propose we get to her?" Allison questions.
"I haven't figured that one out."
"You can count me out."
"Klaus!" I hiss.
"What? You guys should save her. You're great at all the hero shit."
"Oh, Klaus!" Allison states hitting him.
"Listen, listen. Vanya would understand 'cause she has realistic expectations of what I am." I groan pushing him off me. "And what I am is sexy trash."
"You're a big pussy, that's what you are."
"Guys now is not the time." Allison states as Klaus continues.
"Why? Because I don't wanna die? Who does? And martyrs aren't around to enjoy the victory party cause they're dead."
"You are going out there..." Diego orders leaning over Allison.
"I'm not! Go away."
"...Or I'm going to beat you,"
"Hey!" I whine as the two begin to fight, "Get off me!"
"-and not the way you like it!"
"That's my cue."
"Huh?" I question as I watch Allison turn and crawl towards Vanya. "NO! ALLISON!" I yell going to follow her but get stopped by Diego.
"Hey!" He yells, "Allison!" I lean back on the bench moving away from Klaus as energy cracks around us.
"VANYA!" I hear her yell. "VANYA!" I hear her scream before a thud is heard of the other side of the bench.
"Oh my god." I cry out to my sister.
"All right. I'm going." I turn to face him my breathing increasing. He looks at me.
"Don't fuck up." I state as he gives me a small smile. I know he knows what I mean. I know he loves me as I him.
"No, wait, wait, wait, wait." Klaus states grabbing his shirt.
"What?" Diego questions.
"If you don't make it back, there's one thing I need to tell you."
"Klaus, I don't have time for this."
"Please." Diego turns back.
"What?"
"You look like Antonio Banderas with long hair." Klaus's voice trembles. "I just thought you should know."
"Thanks man." Diego replies as I smile between the two. Klaus falls to the ground as Diego leaves. I reach my hand to grab him but miss. I lean back against the wall as I hear Diego grunt. The clinking of metal mixes with the whooshing of wind.
"KATHRYN!" I freeze hearing my name. "I'M NOT GONNA MAKE IT! IT'S UP TO YOU!" I let out a breath as I flinch due to the thud heat from behind us. I turn to Klaus.
"I'm gonna go. If I don't make it you have to save the world."
"I don't think I can." I grab his face causing him to look at me.
"Yes, you can!" I state looking into his eyes. I let go of him as he looks back at me.
"Kat I-"
"Save the world!" I order kissing his head. I turn to shake out my hands. I stand upholding them in front of me stepping out into the hallway. I stumble back a few steps before yelling, pushing every ounce in my body to control the air, to push it back. The energised wind pushes around my head allowing my hair to be pushed out of my face. I groan continuing my walk one step at a time feeling tears get pulled away. My breathing increases as I feel my arms weaken as my eyes begin to droop. "Vanya!" I mutter falling back on the floor. I feel myself slide across the cold floor before rolling into someones outstretched arms. Diego. I feel him put his arms wrap around my torso holding me close to him. My eyes close as darkness takes over my senses.
"Vanya?" I open my eyes to the sound of Allison's voice.
"Physically or emotionally?" Klaus questions as I attempt to sit up.
"Your alive." Diego states puling me to a sitting position. I smile up at Vanya as she smiles down at us.
"Did we save the world or what?"
"I think so." Allison replies, "Buildings still here." I watch as Diego checks his watch.
"Kennedy's a few minutes away." He states standing up.
"No, Diego, wait!" Allison calls out as she stands up running after him. I follow closely behind. He stops at the window pulling up the blinds.
"I still have time to stop Dad before Kennedy makes his final turn."
"No, no, where are you going?" I state pulling him back.
"Look, I saw the explosion. I saw the tapes, Kat. The explosion causes doomsday. You're safe now. He doesn't have to die."
"No, no, Diego--" Allison states as he walks through the door. I look at Allison before following him slamming the door.
"What are you doing?" He questions turning to me.
"Were a team remember." I smile up at him as we continue walking side by side. "Team 0."
The two of run at full speed across the grass, myself a few steps back, towards dad. I breathe in and out controlling my breathing as we pass person after person. I slow down watching him run across the road before tackling dad to the ground. I look around before following him. I gasp seeing an animatronic version of dad.
"Okay, this is making me really uncomfortable." I state. Fake Dad chuckles as guns shots are heard. Diego stands up as I stop breathing. We missed it.
"NO!" He yells out. People scream around us as they run away in different directions. Police sirens echo around us as I turn to him.
"Diego I-"
"No." He whispers before bending down to fake Dad. "Where the hell is he?" He questions holding Dad's clothes in his fist. The puppet hands Diego a note.
"What does it say?" Diego doesn't reply instead he looks off, looking at nothing in particular. He drops the paper causing me to grab it. 'Told you so.'
"That mother fucker!" I state shoving the paper into fake Dad's mouth. "Eat shit." I hiss before standing up. "Diego-" I stop due to him falling into his knees. I take in a staggered breath before kneeling in front of him. His glassy eyes look into mine as I pull him into a hug. I hold him tight as I feel him shake. I don't speak instead we stay in silence.
"He was right." I pull away sniffing.
"No, he isn't right Diego." I state holding his face in my hands causing him to look at me. "Nothing he says is right, okay? He is always wrong." I pause finding the words. "You did everything you can and the people who love you know that." He looks up at me with glassy eyes. He pulls me back into a hug as I comply hugging him just as tight. "You're a hero in my eyes."
