------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was Thursday afternoon and I had deliberately stayed after the drama class. Mrs. Smith had asked me to sing at graduate again, but I still didn't know how I felt. To my great relief, she gave me another week to decide, but on Friday, June 4, she had to know. Now I stood alone in the boring hallway and picked the books out of my bag. I sighed heavily and threw the math book in my locker without much enthusiasm. Then I realized that Derek would park outside my house at 5.30 pm and literally poured out the books that were left.

"Hello, there."

I screamed and jumped high. Alec stood behind me and grinned wide. I picked up a book and raised it to hit him, but he grabbed my wrists before I could.

"Oh no ... I wouldn't do that if I were you," he smiled when I fought against his iron grip.

"But you aren't me and I will hit you very hard with this book because you scare me to death," I replied as he pushed me up against the lockers.

"It seems to go very well ..."

"Can you be quiet and let me go?" I asked angrily.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because you're cute when you're angry ..."

The smile remained on his lips and I felt the locks cut into my back. Suddenly the corridor seemed much darker than usual. The clock on the wall seemed to tick slower than usual and I swallowed hard. No. This did not happen. This couldn't happen. This would not have happened. This-

He kissed me.

Alec kissed me.

His soft lips met mine, and I found myself kissing him back.

No.

Why?

Hell.

"Alec ..." I said and swallowed the lump that grew faster in my stomach. "Stop ..."

"Why, you seem to like it ..."

"Stop it, Alec!" I said and pushed him away. The pain in his eyes gave me a guilty conscience, but I told myself not to falter. "It would never work, Alec ... You and me ... We're not right for each other ..."

"Why? Because you happen to be in love with your work partner! Or that I will never ever be comparable with him?

Did he know that I was absolutely crazy in love with Derek ...?

"What are you talking about ...?" I said as innocently as I could.

"Maybe it's not that hard to guess ... Every fucking girl on this and all the schools around is drooling over that dude! Maybe it's not surprising that most of all footballers are singles ..."

"Alec, just because a guy happens to play football doesn't mean he suddenly becomes more interesting ..."

"Apparently it does matter! But only if you happen to be named Derek Downhill ...!"

"Stop ... Please ... You are very kind and very funny and absolutely wonderful, but ... I don't think we are right for each other ... Let me go," I said and swallowed. It was true, every word. Alec stopped and looked me in the eyes.
