Book: Breakaway, Harry Potter Series
Chapter 12: Devil's Snare
Word Count: 2658The night had come quick. Jackson was going out of his mind with thoughts about what they were going to do tonight. They were just kids yet they were sneaking out to do an adults job. Harry, Ron, Hermione. They were all so brave and when he looked at them, he felt himself grow braver to because as long as they were together, he knew they would all be okay.
With the two boys next to him, they snuck out of their room, meeting Hermione at the bottom of the stairs.
But before they could leave the common room, a loud croaking was heard, making Jackson jump in fright and whip to the side to see an ugly toad staring back at him. "Who the hell is that?" He breathed out.
"Trevor." Harry answered. "He's Neville's toad. Remember?"
Jackson's shoulders dropped and he glared at the toad. "I forgot about that." He lifted his hands and shook them, trying to scare the toad away. "It's so loud. He's going to wake the others." He hissed. "Shoo. Go away."
"Trevor shh!" Ron added, getting closer to the toad. "Go, you shouldn't be here!"
The toad croaked loudly and Jackson narrowed his eyes. The thing was challenging them, wasn't it? Trying to ruin their plan before they could even get out of the common room. He shook his head. It was just a toad. Why was he so worried about it? "I'll get rid of it." He went to stomp forward but came to a quick halt when Neville jumped up from around the chair. "Where did you come from?!"
Neville didn't answer and pointed an accusing finger at the four Gryffindors. "You shouldn't be here. You're sneaking out again, arent you?" Jackson crossed his arms and looked at the others as Harry tried to calm the other boy down. "No! I won't let you! You'll get Gryffindor in trouble again! I - I'll fight you."
He held out his fists in the least threatening way possible. Jackson didn't want to be mean but Neville wasn't exactly the most scary person he had come across in his matching pyjamas and shivering in fear figure.
Hermione grabbed out her wand and pointed it towards a shaking Neville. "Neville, I'm really, really sorry about this... Petrificus Totalus."
Neville's body went stiff, his arms flattening out to his side and his face freezing on his previous expression. His body fell backwards and landed harshly on the floor, making Jackson wince at the pain he was sure Neville was feeling.
Ron gulped, giving the side eye towards Hermione. "You're a little scary sometimes... you know that? Brilliant, but scary."
The four began to move, each saying sorry as they moved past Neville. Jackson pushed the guilt away. There was no time to feel guilty when it was Neville's own fault for trying to stop them.
"It's for your own good, you know." Ron's words were the last thing Neville heard as they all exited the room.
