🐺🐺🐺CHAPTER 9🐺🐺🐺
My mate.
I had a mate.
The warm feeling that had filled me the first time I had found out didn't blossom in my chest and I almost missed it. Inside the dull echo of agony throbbed in every pore. I was tired, so tired. But closing my eyes brought back the nightmare.
Torture scene
My throat was raw from screaming and it felt like I was on fire. No tears streamed from my eyes, they had long since dried up. I don't know how Aelin had survived three months. I didn't know how long it had been. It seemed endless. Movement from behind me caused my head to lift slightly, tell-tale panic pumping in my veins. Maliki stepped into the light, grinning as he took in my appearance. My eyes widened at the sight of the long, thin needle in his hands. Fuck. He came towards me and I struggled against my restraints fruitless. I braced myself for the sting in my left arm and forced myself to look away. A second later he pulled back. Something slimy dripped down the inside of my arm and I grimaced. That wasn't too bad.
"Now this is a little invention of mine."
"Are you sure? Inventing something requires having a brain." Not my best but it would do. Much to my surprise, instead of striking me he chuckled.
"Just wait, soon you'll start to feel the effects kick in." As he said this I felt my head go light and my eyes grew heavy, I tried to keep them open but they drooped closed.
"Soph! Wake up, please! We're getting you out." The familiar voice cause my eyes to snap open. Fenrys! He had come for me! I started crying at the sight of him as he reached over to undo my restraints. Hope caused my heart to swell, I was escaping. Suddenly Fenrys pulled back. The chains must have some sort of spell on them. However, when I looked at his face, it was blank.
"Fen?" Anger twisted his features.
"Did you honestly think I would save you? As if I would waste my time on that." He spat at me and I flinched.
"I-I-what?"
"We may be mates, but why would I choose you. You have no magic, can't fight. You're useless." His words struck me hard and I sobbed.
"Please, I'm sorry."
"Of course you are. You have no spine, you're even fucking scared of the sea. How pathetic is that?"
"You deserve to be tortured." He continued.
"You don't mean that." I shook my head and he tilted his head. He picked up a knife with a serrated edge from the tray.
"You sure about that?" Fenrys stabbed the knife into my thigh and into the chair below. A scream ripped from my throat as pain blinded my senses.
"Fuck you." Fenrys snarled in my face. I closed my eyes and when I opened them Fenrys was gone. Warmth and wetness spread around my trousers, I had pissed myself. The dagger wasn't in my leg but the phantom pain remained. A laugh made me look up.
"Ah I love this invention. I call it Batrachotoxin (AN: This is an actual poison, I couldn't think of a name!). It makes you hallucinate but the hallucinations feel real. Clever really." I straightened. It wasn't real. It was all in my head. Like all of my other self doubts. They were in my head.
