Clary's POV
(Her dream)
There is total darkness except for the grey smoke curling in the edges of my peripheral vision. Suddenly a white light flares behind the smoke and I see something coming into view, a rune, not one I have seen before, but I only know the basics. I observe the twists and turns and commit its spirally flow to memory. The rune is symmetrical, like two runes connected together, which makes it easier to memorise. All goes black again and I sleep dreamlessly.
I wake up with a start and reach for my sketch book. I draw a multiplicity of curved and straight lines, dark with the graphite of my pencil. It feels almost like I'm not in control of these movements, I know what I am doing though, just not why. I end up with the rune I saw in my dream, I don't know what it means but I know I'm going to find out. Maybe dreaming of runes is a shadowhunter thing.
My phone chimes as a creep around the dorm getting ready for the day, it's Simon asking why I haven't been talking to him in so long, he also say for me to call him. So I do I walk out into the corridor and ring him, not sure what I am going to say. In truth I had actually forgotten about Simon for a week, I have just has a lot on.
"Hey, Si sorry I haven't called in a while but I have been super busy!" I call down the phone line,
"Hey, Clary, it's fine but do you want to meet up for coffee today? I suggest Java Jones but anywhere is good" he says,
"Sounds good but could we make it to go and go to the park?" I say trying to think of a public but private place for me to talk to Simon,
"Sure if that's what you want", he replies,
"Cool, I just have some stuff to tell you" I say vaguely back,
"Sure meet you there in 20?" Simon suggests,
"Okay, see you soon" I say before hanging up. I have to rush to make it in time. I better make a stop at the cafeteria if I want to eat something for breakfast. I throw on some combat boots with my jeans and tank top and zip out the door forgetting to put my sketch book away.I drop in at the cafeteria and pick up a chocolate pastry and and orange juice, then go to wait at the bus stop. when the bus finally comes I have 7 minutes before I am supposed to be meeting Simon and I have finished my breakfast. Sitting on the bus I plan exactly what I am going to say to Simon. I mean how do you break it to your best friend that you live in a secret world much like one you would find in a young adult book, seriously!
Java Jones is pretty empty probably because a new Starbucks opened just next door. I see Simon in our usual booth and we wave at each other. Simon looks the same as ever, wearing jeans a comic shirt and dirty converse. He smiles his rich true smile across the cafe and gets up to welcome me into his arms, it's then I realise how much I have missed him.
"Hey stranger" Simon says as we hug,
"Hey to you to. Have you ordered?" I ask,
"Of course, and your black with 2 sugars is on its way" Simon says.We grab our takeaway cups and stroll down the road to Central Park. Simon asks what I have been up to for the last couple of weeks and I just brush off and say you will know all in good time. We get to the park and I pick a good spot to sit which has no near by paths or benches so we can have this chat in relative privacy.
"So" I start, "I have some big news to tell you and I need you to promise you won't freak out. That's why we're here in the park so you can't freak out because it would attract the attention of on lookers" I announce cautiously,
"Okay, I promise" Simon says not sounding confident in his words,
"You have to believe everything I am about to say, because I am not bullshitting you! I am serious, it took me a while to adjust but you need to believe me" I say,
"Your scaring me now Clary" Simon says,
"Just shut up and listen!" I demand.Izzy's POV
I wake up lazily realising that today is my last day of freedom before the school year starts. That's an awful start to the morning. And to top it all off Clary isn't in her bed, I mean seriously I'm having a bad day. I wonder where she went. I get up after much protest from my body willing me to go back to sleep and see clary has left her sketch book out and open. I sneak a peek even though I know I shouldn't, it's her private art diary and I'm snooping, but she really is asking for it by leaving it open like that. Maybe she left it open knowing I would look, maybe I was meant to see this, or maybe I'm just making all of this shit up to make myself feel better about invading her privacy. That sounds about right.
The drawing is a type of rune drawn in pencil. Its not a rune I have seen before, maybe its from the book of white? It also could just be a scribble Clary has drawn that looks a bit like a rune to me. Oh well I really need some food so i'll get dressed and go to the cafeteria. I dress in casual clothes and pop out the door hardly remembering my cafeteria pass and the keys to lock the door, I really need to step up my game. I spin around after locking the door and walk straight into none other than Magnus Bane.
"Sorry Magnus!" I call,
"No problem Izzy" he says,
"Hey Magnus, can you have a look at something for me?" I question,
"I guess, where is it?" he asks,
"Just inside" I say unlocking the door."No I have never seen anything like it before Izzy, it must just be a scribble of her's" Magnus proclaims,
"Yeah, just thought I would check anyway" I say before thanking Magnus and stalking off to the cafeteria for breakfast at 11:00.Simon's POV
I can't believe what Clary had just told me. She has given me many reasons to believe her but its hard when its something this big and this obscure. She even pulled out her "stele" this magic wand thing that draws mystic tattoos that have powers. She draws a "glamour" and all of a sudden she disappears. Like seriously. Disappears of the face of the earth. Right in front of my eyes. Gone. Then before I know it she is back. She explains about how "glamours" are what hides the "shadow world" from the "mundane world". It's sick! I have a best friend who is being trained to live life as a full time demon slayer. I'm actually a bit jealous.
I say, "I promise I believe you Clary and most of all I promise I can keep your secret, with my life, I will guard it."
