"I really don't think the birds and the bees talk is going to explain any of this," I give my parents a skeptical look. Even though I mean't it as humor, the look on their face told me that's exactly what we were going to talk about. My father sighed and looked at the ceiling trying to articulate his words, "Um, you see, dragon shifters procreate in a much different way than humans do. You could compare it to how birds have offspring. It's not quite the same but there isn't a need to go into that much detail. Anyway, both parents must be in their dragon form to have children. That was until we knew we were having you." He puts his hand on my mom's. She then continues the explanation.
"All of our history states we cannot have children in our human form. We had already had Jake and Emily in the traditional way of our species. Well, anyway, we do have human forms with human needs. We never thought we would need birth control until I started showing signs of being pregnant. We were shocked and didn't know what to do." My father picked up the explanation again.
"See, we already had this cabin for our transformations and we had used it to cover your siblings birth. It just wouldn't make sense to a human because your mom would never have looked pregnant which would raise questions. On the flip side, your mom being pregnant with you would raise questions with the supernatural community. Anyways, we had a witch friend stay here and help us through the pregnancy. Once you were born, we went back to the city to live. We raised you but kept our distance especially when you didn't exhibit signs of being a shifter. We couldn't have you know of our existence and expose us. You also didn't show an aversion to humans as most supernatural children do. This only increased our concerns of exposure." There were tears forming in my mother's eyes when I looked at her face. It was like staring into my own tortured blue eyes. All of a sudden, she springs toward me and wraps me in a loving embrace. As someone that isn't used to their mother's love, it was a welcomed surprise. I wrap my arms around her and give her a tight squeeze. My father also joins in the hug. I start to feel wetness forming on my shirt where my mother's face is at. Through sniffles and fabric, I hear a soft voice say, "I have always loved you and I will always love you."
That's the moment when tears start rolling down my cheek.
