Picking at her sleeve, her eyes stared out the window of the van. Watching the environment zoom by her like time was speeding up. Glitchtrap slightly shifted the steering wheel, watching his surroundings much like her but he was paying closer attention. He always had the keen eye, he could tell when someone was going to do something against ruling or when someone lied. Sometimes it was easier than others but the only person he could never read was his brothers. They knew of his little talent and found ways around it. He stopped at a red light and let his eyes drift towards her, her hood up and sleeves hiding her hands. His eyes swept back to the road and he slowly moved forward as the light turned green.
"Vanny?" He chimed in. Her head turned to look at him. He smirked a bit.
"Wanna have some fun?" He asked. He could see her face flush up brighter than the red light they were coming up on.
"Y-yes?" she said, not sure what he was hinting at.
"Hang on tight." He said, jerking the wheel and swerving the car. Vanessa yelped and gripped onto the passenger seat under her. The car screeched and ran backwards past the red light. He turned over the seat and put his arm over the side of the seat, looking through the back window of the van. He smirked as his brow furrowed. He ran the car backwards and into a parking lot. Spinning along the gravel and doing donuts. Vanessa giggled, the car spinning making her stomach do flips. She felt like she was on a roller coaster. Glitchtrap let the wheel spin freely before grabbing it and turning the car straight again. He sped off and into a forest path.
"That was so awe-"
"Shhhh..." He said, putting a finger over her lips. His ears twitched and he motioned her to listen.
There were faint sirens. Vanessa panicked.
"Wait for it." He slowly reached up and pressed his thumb to the tip of his middle finger. He pulled his thumb across his finger and snapped. She could see a field of purple cover behind them, it disappeared. She could see the cars pass by, bright flashing blue and red lights. She stared through the rearview mirror. He laughed.
"Simply indulging is it not?" He asked excitedly. Vanessa nodded in agreement.
"I always used to do this when I was a teen. My older brother studied hiding places and when we needed an escape from home, we drove off and caused mayhem! We easily hid in woods and the sort. Cops were much dumber back then." He said, undoing his seat belt. Vanessa raised a brow.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm getting out. I need a smoke break."
"My Lord, you really shouldn't smoke." She warned. He chuckled.
"Dear, I don't have real lungs."
"But there's second hand smoking." She said, watching him hold the cigarette in his mouth, ready to light. He flicked the lighter, groaning.
"You're lucky, it seems I'm out of lighter fluid." He said putting it away and flicking the cigarette into the woods.
"That was wasteful"
"The ones I have are biodegradable. I find birds and animals chewing on them every now and then." He said, adjusting his vest. Vanessa undid her seatbelt and got out, climbing onto the top of the van.
"Grandma used to sit with me on top of the car to star gaze." She laid back, her hair sprawling out against the warm metal, "Before her body started shutting down, at least." She continued, staring at the tree lining.
"I take it you and her were very close then?" He asked, crawling up on top of the vehicle with her. She nodded in response.
"She did a lot for me. But, once she passed, my mom and dad got rid of everything about her. Like she never existed. I constantly blamed myself for her death, because she always ran off to do things for me. First they agreed that it was my fault, then it turned to "Who's Grandma Rose?" and all could remember her by were...these shoes she made by hand." She sat up and slipped off her purple shoes. They had smooth and well kept rubber of creamy white, it matched her lavender and amethyst laces. On either sides of the heel, were sewn hearts. Jewels of fine tanzanite sewn into the outer sides of them. She took good care of them, it was the last memory of her loving grandmother after all. Her grandmother worked briefly in industries that made things of high priced clothing and shoes. She did it to help support herself and Vanessa in secret. Slowly her nerves in her hands were overcome by carpal tunnel syndrome. She lost feeling to make things. Vanessa always wanted to make her something to help with feeling but she never got the chance to. Her grandmother fell ill for some reason. Her parents kept her silent and refused Vanessa to see her.
Thankfully, being the troublesome teenager she was, she snuck out and said goodbye before her grandmother let go. It was like she was holding on for just a little longer, just for her.
Glitchtrap heard her sniffle, he could see the tears running down her cheeks. He tipped her head up and gently wiped the salty substance from her face.
"I'm sure she would be proud to see you now." He said, trying to forget the horrible crime he made her do. Why was he having so much culpability? He never did before, but now it just made him crumble, this girl made his heart race in grimacing guilt. He ran his fingers through her loose hair and bangs.
"I just know she'd love to see her favorite granddaughter." His voice giving out what sounded to be real sympathy. Vanessa sniffled and smiled. Her cheeks were red and thanks to her tears it was hard to tell what from. She couldn't help but want to get closer to him, her arms wrapping around his waist and holding him snuggly. He ran his palm along her back and over her shoulder blades.
"It's alright, my dear." He said, his voice oddly convincing. She relaxed into him and stared at the sky as she laid in his lap, letting him pet her gently.
"The sky is beautiful, even during the day." She said quietly. Glitchtrap chuckled.
"It tends to be in these parts. I remember coming here often." He followed her gaze, remembering the nights of star gazing, back when Elizabeth was just a toddler and Jeremy was still in his wife's stomach. Michael was just becoming a teenager as well. The start of their marriage and life was so relaxed. He wished somewhat he could get it back, one can only wish for so much though. But, he was happy right where he was, with his follower and watching the stars like in his past.
Star gazing wasn't the only thing that made Vanessa happy.
