- BETWEEN FRIENDS
"and we'll keep falling on each other to fill the empty spaces..."
✧
Priscilla walked over to the tap in the corner and turned on the faucet, trying to keep her cool. She wanted to splash a bit of water on her face, sit in the corner and do nothing, but she had to face the music. Fred came to aid her and dropped a big wooden bucket inside the sink. It started to fill with steamy water and bubbles in the candlelight.
Fred noticed she still looked so distant and upset. "We don't have to talk about it if you don't want to," he offered.
She looked up at him then with a sad smile on her face. "No, I'd like to clear the air."
She turned off the faucet and grabbed one small pile of clothes from the corner. She threw them into the bucket to let them soak in the soapy water and sat down on a nearby stool. Fred leaned against the counter, ready to listen intently.
"I got a letter the other day that my parents have gone into hiding. I have no idea who's after them, where they are, when I'll hear from them, or if they're okay. And there's a sick and twisted part of me that doesn't care."
The rest came flooding out of her, and Fred didn't say a word. She explained everything; she explained their jobs, how distanced they became when she started at Ilvermorny, and how she didn't feel like she had parents anymore in the first place. She shared how scared she was that she had nowhere to go. When the tears started coming out, he knelt down next to her and put a hand on her knee as she began to sob. Everything began to flow out of her - she was surprised how easy it felt to say all of this to Fred. She talked about how scared she was of never hearing from her parents again, how different Hogwarts was, and how much pressure she felt to catch up. She even brought up how much anxiety she had around possibly losing her friends she had made at Hogwarts, himself and even George and Draco included, just like she had lost her friends at Ilvermorny.
"I'm sorry about your parents, Cilla. You're going to have to be strong," he consoled.
"I'm just... I was so terrified of making a mistake and then I did with you. I'm sorry if I hurt you, Fred, I really am," she confessed. "I don't know if I can do that again."
He took a moment to think carefully about what he was going to say next. "What part about last night was a mistake?"
"Leaving? Pushing things too far? I don't know. I'm not ready for a relationship, or even a situation-ship."
Fred chuckled. "Nobody said anything about a relationship. I reckoned we were just having a bit of fun... I like hanging out with you. Thank you for your apology, I understand now why you left. It doesn't have to happen again... unless you want it to." He looked up at her apprehensively. "I'd like to stay friends either way."
