Chapter 26

(F/N)'s POV

I didn't know what Riley and I were going to do from here now that the Volturi found us. But I did know one thing; Demetri's disappearance was almost swept under the rug after I mentioned it. Why was that? Did someone see that coming, or am I overthinking things? I cocked an eyebrow at the Guard members present and asked, "Why did you sweep Demetri hitting me under the rug?"

Alec and Felix stared at me while Jane countered, "Did we? Oh, my mistake! I thought we were focusing on how you left him and us back in Volterra like we were trash so you could come hang out with your vegetarian creation."

I growled, "Call him that one more time, Jane, and I'll kick you in your ovaries to China. Answer my question, dammit! We can fight about this later!"

Jane squeaked and hid behind Felix; I always knew how to scare the living shit out of her even when she put up the brave facade. Felix chuckled at Jane's reaction and told me, "We're not making light of what Demetri did to you, (F/N). No one who claims to be in love with someone should hit their significant other, regardless of the argument." He then cocked an eyebrow, which was very uncharacteristic of him, and asked, "What did you do that prompted him to hit you? If you're comfortable sharing, of course."

I was silent at Felix's question. I'd promised Jason I wouldn't out his coven and himself to the Volturi yet, but Felix was silently begging me to do so with the puppy dog eyes only he could do without him even knowing he was doing it. What was I to do? I didn't know how to respond, and Alec asked, "Did he insult you and you hit him back, (F/N)? He usually never did that at the palace."

I shivered at the memories and answered, "You're right in that he never hit me at the palace, Alec. But what you didn't see and probably heard was us screaming at each other almost every single night when you all fed."

Alec and Felix stared at me while Jane and Riley asked, "What happened then?"

I answered just as quickly as they asked, "We fought like a house on fire every single day when no one else was watching." Felix opened his mouth and then shut it like a carp gasping for air in a river, Alec stared at me, Jane frowned, and Riley looked like he shit a brick and then shoved that brick back up his ass so he could save it for Demetri's face (Yes, that was a gross image, but I'm sticking with it because it makes sense in the moment. Don't question my vampire logic, I'm old!). I held up my hands and said, "No, Demetri never hit me when we fought, but I will say that the verbal spars between us were quite epic and broke the sound barrier of what humans could tolerate. Caius even said at one point during a morning feeding that some of the humans we were eating had split eardrums, according to medical records."

Riley cocked an eyebrow at me and Felix interjected, "Another vampire at the palace named Heidi is a tech wizard. She hacks into every hospital's database and uses that to hunt for victims when we don't have tours going on every other day of the year."

Riley nodded and asked me, "Did she help you get to Forks when you first came?"

I knew he was still getting to know me, but seeing his boyish curiosity at what Felix just told him made me smile; this kid is going to be the only reason I stick around anywhere. I answered, "She didn't, but I did ask her to help me with the computers in the library once. I couldn't figure out how they worked and I threw them at the wall when they showed a blue screen. One of them hit Demetri square in the head, which was an unintended bonus."

Riley chuckled nervously and said, "You really don't have a lid on your anger with technology, (F/N)."

I nodded and stated, "Damn straight, and that's the way I like it, even if I'm learning!"
