Homesick

My ears pick up the sounds of pencil scratching paper, tapping and groans of suffering. I use the deductive reasoning that I was reminded of today to come to the conclusion that someone was doing homework. Hair brushes against me as I stretch, and I roll over in my makeshift hammock.

"How long was I out?" I yawn.

"Well it's nearly seven now."

"I missed dinner."

"There's some food here if you want it."

I debated, sleep or food? My stomach growled, supplying me with its opinion. My body protested as I drag myself outside.

"Whatcha got for me?"

He stopped in his writing to point to an untouched sandwich. I look at the work spread out before him and grimace.

"Do your teachers hate you? And isn't that your food?"

"I'm in high school, this is normal. And yes, but I'm not hungry."

I sit up on his shoulder. "Well, I'm not eating until you do."

He shruggs, causing me to lose my perch and fall forward. I grab onto the first thing I can, which just so happens to be a pullstring. His hood closes a bit as the string drops lower, and I feel a hand brought underneath my feet. My heart stops its marathon training as my lungs relearn how to hold air. I suck in breaths in an attempt to stop hyperventilating.

The legs beneath me apparently can't hold my weight anymore and I fall to my butt on Jeramiah's hand. Which is shaking, about as much as me.

"Sorry, sorry, sorry, are you hurt?" He groans.

"Stupid so stupid, idiot, you're an idiot Jerra, idiot." I suppose I wasn't supposed to hear that.

Before I even have time to respond I'm lowered to the bed as he lays his head on his knees and sighs.

"I'm fine, that's definitely not the worst thing that's happened to me."

"It's probably close." He mumbles.

I raise my eyebrows even though he can't see me."Not even, you're gonna have to do far worse than that to even compete."

He mumbled.

"Let's see, the first guy who found me, what did he do? Oh yeah, that one nearly swallowed me whole, not to mention was completely oblivious to my screams. He also laid on me, stuffed me in his pocket, let his girlfriend sit on me. I think me falling do to my own clumsiness isn't even comparable."

"You've got to be making that up."

"I wish."

I saw his eyes peeking over his elbow. He was smiling.

He unraveled from the ball he'd created.

"How did you live through any of those?"

I really hadn't thought of that.

I shrugged.

He tilted his head slightly, and just looked at me. I copied him, pleased when I saw a smile fight its way onto his face.
Are you flirting with him?
I don't think so...
You don't think so.
I'm trying to make him smile, he's too young to have frown lines.
True.
Are you flirting with him?
If you aren't then neither am I.
True.
We haven't talked much lately.
We've been sleeping latelyz which is going to screw up our sleep schedule, if it hasn't already.
Yeah...
Just don't try to retrieve ear buds again.
That experience scarred me for life, when I get home I'm throwing my pair away and getting headphones.
If we get home.

If I get home.

My light mood snuffed out. Would I be in this situation for the rest of my life? Never able to have sex or a child? Never with people my own size? Would I die like this?

I sit down hard.

"You alright?"

I wipe at my face. Oh my god how would I get home?

"Allie?" Warm breath flows around me. I bring my knees to my chest and shake my head.

His hand wraps gently around me, and I'm lifted up. My arms wrap tighter around my legs.

Then I hear a loud drum, beating away next to me. Its only after I feel the vibration of Jeramiah's voice as he talks to me that I realize the drum is his heart.

"Jerra?" I sob.

"Yeah?"

"Thank you."

He remains silent, but I feel his emotion in the way his hands tighten slightly around me.

"Welcome." He whispered.
