20 // Prom Night

Chapter 20

It's the prom night tonight and I'm not excited. I never did.

For the past few days that I have been dodging every single promposal in the hallway and hearing people talk about the prom, gusto ko na kaagad maglaho. It feels like I'm so over it. Sabik na sabik ang lahat para sa prom, of course, except sa lower years. They have been putting a lot of time to it pero no'ng nagkaroo ng competition ang Decathlon Team ng school ay ni-isa ay walang sumuporta sa amin. Yes, they send their congratulations but those are not enough.

And now, I feel like I was a shadow of Noah's past.

It all started on that unexpected date then I became famous for a couples of days until Gwen took the spotlight and now it's Cirie. Hindi ko naman ipinagdadamot si Noah in any other way. Because first of all, hindi siya sa akin at wala naman kaming label. We're just friends kaya wala akong karapatan para magdrama on my side

Just to think that they all have dates and I have none, iyon ang nakakalungkot. Pero hindi ko naman kailangan ng date para lang masabi kong fulfilling ang prom ko. No, I don't need a date. Siguro may inggit from other girls but surely, kaya ko namang tumayo sa sarili kong mga paa without looking at them like that.

I've went to school not looking after some jowa, I've come here to graduate and make my parent proud and that's my goald. And being in the prom is just an insane bonus of having a normal teenage life.

"Tate, are you ready na ba? We're excited to you see now!" sabik na sabi ni Mama.

They haven't seen me trying it, ang sabi ko surprise na lang sa mismong prom night. They are the only one expecting me to see wearing it, wala nang iba, sila lang at siguro para na rin sa sarili ko. Satisfaction ko na lang sa sarili ko ang maka-attend ng prom at ma-enjoy ang gabing ito so I'm hoping that it won't end into something hurtful or disappointing.

"Yes, Ma, I'm done..." mahina kong sagot at tumalikod na ako sa harap ng salamin.

Binuksan ni Mama ang pinto at saka siya sumilip. As she opens the door widely, nakita ko rin si Dad na sumilip and they all looked at me, smiling and they both hugged each other pa. Napakunot noo naman ako sa kanilang dalawa.

"Why are you guys looking so weird at me?" ngiwi kong tanong sa kanilang dalawa.

Mom giggles. "You really look lovely in that gown, Tate."

"I agree," Dad said and nodded. "I'm so glad that I bought that gown for you. You really look like a princess."

"No, she's a queen," Mom corrected Dad. "She'll be the prom queen tonight, I'm sure to that."

I laughed and slightly rolled my eyes. "I don't think I'll be the Prom Queen. That's the dream but I don't think that I'll get to that point. I just want to enjoy the night and whatever may happen tonight, I'll be happy with it."

"Of course, you will enjoy this special night, dear," Mom reaches me to give me a hug. Sumama na rin naman si Dad at binigyan nila ako ng mahigpit na yakap. I felt the warmth with them. Parang gusto ko na lang mag-stay dito sa bahay instead na makihalubilo sa mga schoolmates ko ngayon. I would still feel invisible naman kahit anong gawin ko.

No one will notice me aside from being the school nerd which I really don't care.

"I wish I could go and be your date to prom," father said.
