I searched up the salon on my phone.Huh, I can't find the number... guess I'll just go in and ask.
I crossed the street and got a closer look at the shop.
It was small but very charming and clean-looking. The store's sign was large and pure white, with the lettering in a bold orange font, decorated with small tangerine drawings on the sides.
I walked into the salon as a bell tied to the door signaled my entering.
It looked like any old salon, with white walls and hardwood floors, and the entire place was embellished in lush potted plants. Employees were swiftly walking back and forth to cut, wash, and blow-dry. There were plenty of customers close by, sitting patiently in the salon chairs.
All of these customers are women.
I sighed. I'll give it a shot anyway. It's not like I have any other options.
"Hello, sir! Is there anything I can help you with?"
Walking to the front desk, I smiled at the young woman who had just greeted me. Her name tag read "Kataoka Shizue".
"Hi, I was wondering if you cut men's hair? I was going to a barbershop but it appears they just closed down."
"Oh, I see, that's a shame. Well, I'm not exactly sure myself, but I can bring my manager in here and he can help you out."
"Alright, thanks a lot."
"No problem! Now I'll be right back."
And with that, she walked towards the back of the salon, and went through a door that read "Employees Only".
After standing there for about a minute, I awkwardly looked down at my watch, trying to look busy.
I could feel all of the women within the shop looking at me.
Luckily, this is something I'm generally used to.
For the majority of my life, I've been seen as attractive.
Even back in high school, I used to have to reject girls who liked me, and I still get women asking me out in the workplace (which is pretty unprofessional if you ask me, but oh well).
I never really understood why some can be so superficial. Sure, I may look good, but why would anyone want to date me? I'm not kind, or funny. I don't even like to talk to anyone unless it's necessary, and some people have actually found me to be rude because of my bluntness.
People really piss me off sometimes.
I looked back up at the ladies whose eyes were on me.
They all appeared to be middle-aged or in their 40's, probably getting their hair done before going back home to their husbands and kids.
I watched as their faces turned red, and some looked away, hoping I didn't notice their stares.
Ugh. How annoying.
While I was irritated by their inability to keep their eyes to themselves, I still smiled over at them. They smiled back at me, faces growing even redder with giddiness.
Another two minutes passed.
'I'll be right back' my ass.
Should I just go? It doesn't seem like anyone is coming back out.
I sighed.
So much for getting a haircut tonight.
Right when I turned to leave, I heard a man's voice coming from far behind me.
"Kata-Kun, where is he? Oh, is that him?"
I turned around.
That's when I saw him.
His hair is so...
pretty.
The man grinned at me.
When he smiled, his eyes felt kind. Warm. Genuine. It made me feel nice.
Why is he... kind of.. cute?
Although he shared the height of a middle schooler, he appeared to only be a bit younger than me. His eyes were big and brown. He had small lips and a cute, tiny nose that was slightly upturned. And a heart-shaped face, with slightly chubby cheeks and a pointy chin. One of his ears was pierced with a gold stud. His hair was a medium-short length but appeared to be extremely fluffy and thick. Though what intrigued me the most, was the color of his hair. It reminded me of something, yet I couldn't put my finger on it.
It was bright orange.
Maybe... like the sun?
Yeah. Like how the sun must look up in space.
Almost blinding, but it wasn't enough to make me want to look away. In fact, it was quite the opposite.
"So, you're looking to get a hair cut?"
Oh. Right.
"Uh, yeah."
"Alright. So we can actually fit you in. Most of my employees aren't trained to cut short hair, but luckily I'm pretty good at it, so I'll be doing yours instead!"
"Oh okay, that sounds good actually, thanks."
"No problem. What's your name?"
He walked towards the computer sitting on the front desk.
"It's Kageyama. Kageyama Tobio."
He typed something into the computer, then looked back up at me.
"Okay, Kageyama! You're all set! Just sit in this chair right here and I'll come back out in a bit."
I nodded and sat down.
He walked behind the door and quickly came back out with a smock which he set on a table beside me.
He scurried to the back of the salon again and grabbed a cape, then wrapping it around me. Once he did that he put on the smock, and within the pockets were the tools he needed.
Putting his hands on his hips, he looked at me through the mirror in front of us.
"So, what are you thinking? Just a trim?"
"Yup, pretty much."
He nodded in response. "Okay, sounds easy enough!"
"You know what? I'll give you a free wash since you're a new customer, and since I like you."
I gestured me to get up, and I followed.
For the next forty minutes, we made small talk, mostly me telling him about where I work and what I do. He didn't really say much about himself.
After removing the cape off from around my neck, he turned me in the salon chair towards the mirror to see myself.
"What do you think?"
"...Wow."
He laughed "You like it? I'm glad."
It was weird. I've never seen my hair look so good. Shiny and voluminous, and parted down the side, which was completely different from how I have normally worn it (either slicked back or completely down). Not to mention it was almost as fluffy as the stylist's hair.
"Yeah, I really do. Thanks a lot... Um, what's your name?"
"Oh, how rude of me! I never introduced myself!"
Once I stood, he looked up at me and shook my hand.
"Nice to meet you! The name's Hinata Shouyo."
