"So where are we headed?" Hinata said as he looked up at me.
I held open the door for him and he smiled. "Thanks."
Then, I responded. "I have a place in mind. Actually, it's pretty close. Called Sakanoshita. Ever heard of it?"
I noticed his eyes sparkle. "Oh! I've gone there plenty of times! I love their meat buns."
I smiled. "Good. We'll order some."
We began our walk to the restaurant.
The afternoon springtime air felt warm and light on my skin.
Although it was quiet, there was surprisingly no feeling of awkwardness between the two of us.
Once we arrived I walked towards the hostess, Hinata close behind me.
"Hello. Table for two please?"
She smiled. "Sure! We aren't too busy right now, so we'll get you seated in just a moment."
Soon enough, we were lead to the back of the restaurant and sat down in two chairs facing each other.
The hostess put down two cups of water. "I'll send a waiter over here to take your orders."
I nodded. "Great, thanks."
As soon as she walked off, I looked over to Hinata, who was still taking off his coat.
I watched him as he sat down across from me and smiled.
"You've been here a couple of times, right? What else have you gotten besides meat buns that's good?"
He laughed and scratched his head. "Well, I've only ever gotten those meat buns. The first time I was here they were so good, so I couldn't help but order them the next time. And the time after that."
I laughed. "That good, huh?"
Hinata grinned. "Yeah."
The waiter came towards us and asked for each of our orders. We ended up getting a large plate of the meat buns to share.
I figured I'd ask him about himself since yesterday he mostly just asked questions about my own life. "You already know a lot about me."
He nodded.
"So, what about you? Like, when did you decide you wanted to cut hair?"
He smiled again.
"I guess I just kind of always knew, even when I was little. I remember I used to do my little sister's hair, plus a couple of my friends' hair, and I was really good at it from the start." He laughed. "Not to sound cocky or anything. So that's why I decided to open my own salon."
"No, I think that's awesome- wait, you own it?"
He let out another giggle. "Yeah, of course I do! You know I'm the manager, right? I'm the owner too!"
"Wow. That's amazing."
I thought back to the name.
"Why'd you name it "Tangerine"? It's probably after your hair if I'm guessing."
"Ah, yeah! Actually, that's what my mom used to call me all the time growing up. I just thought it was really fitting for a salon name too."
I smiled. "I'm sure she must love that."
Suddenly, his expression grew sad.
I've never... Seen him frown before.
"I'm sure she would love it, but...
my mom passed away when I was nineteen."
Oh.
