Book: In The Shadows
Chapter 2: The Night Of The Comet
Word Count: 2987"I was hoping to see you this morning." Jenna smiled as Caden sat in front of her at the kitchen table. She poured him a cup of coffee and pushed it over to him. "You look tired."
He didn't want to say it was because his music had kept him up so he just looked down at his coffee. "Yeah. I'm always tired." He joked, wrapping his hands around the warm mug and brought it up to his lips, sighing in relief when the liquid slid down his throat.
"Now, I need your honest opinion." Jenna started just as a perk looking Elena entered the kitchen. "Do I look adult? As in respectfully parental?"
Elena looked her over. "Depends on where you're going."
"Jeremy's parent-teacher conference. Hair up or down?" She put her hair up and posed for them, making Caden laugh at her antics.
"Sexy stewardess." Elena said and Jenna let her hair fall down her shoulders. "Boozy housewife."
"I thought it looked nice either way." Caden mumbled.
Jenna smiled at him but when with Elena suggestion. "Up it is. You're feisty today."
"I feel good, which is rare. So I've decided to go with it. Fly free, walk on the sunshine, and all that stuff." The Gilbert girl looked around and frowned. "Where is Jeremy?"
"He left early. Something about getting to wood shop early to finish a birdhouse." She paused when she saw the look on Elena's face. "There is no wood shop, is there?"
"And that's my cue to leave." Caden finished off his coffee and stood up. "I'll see you after school." He said to his aunt before picking up his bag and leaving the house.

Instead of going straight to school, the boy went to the hospital to see how Vicki was doing. He knew Matt must be going out of his mind with worry and he wanted to make sure he was alright. He might not want to be romantically involved with Matt but he still wanted to be his friend.
He asked got the location of Vicki's room and made his way there, finding Matt sitting in the chair next to her bed. "Hey." He greeted quietly.
"Hey." Matt said, surprised that he was here. "You don't have to be quiet. She's knocked out. The nurses said she won't wake up for a couple hours."
"How is she?" Caden asked, bringing the seat on the other side of the room around to sit next to the blonde.
Matt looked at her sadly. "They're keeping her overnight to make sure there's no infection, but she should be able to come home tomorrow."
"That's great news." He responded enthusiastically, trying to make Matt feel a little better. "What about your mum? Does she know about what happened?"
Matt scoffed, feeling anger bubble up inside of him at the mention of her. "Called and left a message. She's in Virginia Beach with her boyfriend, so... we'll see how long it takes her to come rushing home."
