I looked down at my feet swinging back and forth. It was Saturday, and I was waiting for Carly to show up like she did every Saturday so we could hang out. Except it was an hour after she usually arrived, and I was still all alone.

Maybe she is just late?

I couldn't bring myself to believe my own words.

The ocean continued to dance to it's own melody, never stopping to rest. I watched the ocean for a moment, wondering how it could be so beautiful yet so deadly.

Like a wolf.

Suddenly I remembered that night, when I heard the wolves howling, and the wish I had made.

I wish I could befriend a wolf.

I stood up and started walking to the other side of the island where a small pack of wolves lived in a large forest. Where Danny always seemed to go.

The island I lived on had houses constructed to every shore, but the other island was mainly dominated by a large oak forest. The docks connecting the two had been built only two years earlier, but hardly anyone ever used them.

I stepped off the dock and onto the hard, dusty ground. Pavement had yet to be laid for the few buildings that happened to be there. Most were fishing shacks or small huts that people lived in if they wanted to get away from the islanders. (Which isn't much of a getaway if you asked me.) I walked past them and into the woods, wondering where the wolves lived.

I don't really know what got into me. Sure, I liked the outdoors... But going into a forest with creatures with unknown intentions? Yeah, I'm crazy, but if no one knows, what's the harm? I mean, the worst that could happen is that I could get eaten alive and never heard from again. Perfectly safe.

I walked for some time, looking at the animals and insects that filled the forest. Several times I saw deer staring at me with wide eyes before bounding away into the depths of the trees.

But I never even once glimpsed a wolf. They had to have had a den somewhere around here. However this was large island, and they usually keep their dens a well hidden secret. It's like trying to find bobby pins in my house.

I wish I could befriend a wolf.

My wish echoed in my head again. I wanted a furry friend, and since my parents didn't like dogs and were allergic to cats, the wolves were my only chance.

What am I even saying? A chance with wolves? What am I getting myself into? Wandering into a forest alone, asking for trouble? A wolf is more likely to eat me than be my friend. I'm just asking to get killed.

I kicked a rock in frustration and sat down on the cool ground beneath a tree. I looked to my left and saw a single purple flower blooming in the smallest patch of sunlight. I picked it and breathed in it's flowery fragrance, then tucked it behind my ear.

I closed my eyes for a while, and before I knew it, I had fallen asleep, in the middle of the forest.

Alone.
