"My dear apologies for disturbing everyone's dinner but it is time to finally sort our new student. Jaida Nibley. Please come forward Miss Nibley." Dumbledore announced, his calm voice booming across the hall.
Luna and Terry had reassured me throughout the whole dinner and it worked... until now. With trembling legs, I walked towards the front. I sat down on the wooden chair at the front of the hall, and let out a shaky breath. Professor McGonagall also approached the chair, carrying the sorting hat in her arms.
"The last student of this year will be sorted." Dumbledore said.
My vision became blurry and it felt like my head was spinning. Those stares and whispers of everyone didn't help either.
'I bet she's Hufflepuff.' 'Wasn't she the downfall of Hogwarts?' Especially the whispers of my friends who were debating with each other about which house I would be sorted in didn't help. I didn't want anyone to be mad at me for not getting sorted in the house they guessed.
As the hat was placed on my head, I shot one last glimpse at the twins before the dark inside of the hat blocked my eyesight..
"Interesting" The sorting hat mumbled. "It seems to me that ..."
"Seems what?" I say, unable to stop my trembling lips from forming the words.
"Nothing has changed." The hat said. Gasps were heard in the hall along with the whispers of flying ghosts. Dumbledore held a concerned expression on his face along with every other teacher except for Snape, who of course, was smirking.
"Same answer," the sorting hat mumbled. "Then what is she? Does she even belong here? I bet she's a muggle!" I guess the veritaserum worked since Daphne spoke out the rude remarks. Although, I couldn't decide whether it was the veritaserum or Daphne's bitchy attitude talking.
"Then what am I?" I ask, repeating Daphne's words. She was right.
"Same answer! At the same time you do not possess the qualities of any one house, yet you possess the qualities of all." The sorting hat paused before continuing.
"You are daring like a Gryffindor, yet lacking determination. Witty like a Ravenclaw, but lacking creativity. Loyal like a Hufflepuff, yet lack patience. And resourceful like a Slytherin, yet lack ambition."
This was the same answer as previous time. "But-" I tried to say something but already got interrupted.
"Can't be sorted!"
I felt so embarrassed. Why can't the hat just sort me into a house?
"What do you mean I can't be sorted? Just sort me!" I whispered harshly to the hat. The whispers became louder. Professor McGonagall grabbed the hat off my head.
"Silence!" Dumbledore called out which made everyone shut their mouths immediately. The teachers suggested talking about this.
"Ms Nibley, you may return to your seat." Dumbledore gestured as the other teachers stood up, and walked through the door behind them. "Everyone may continue eating. The teachers and I will discuss this matter now. Jaida we will inform you when we have found a solution." Dumbledore told me before I walked back to my seat.
A moment later puddings appeared along with blocks of ice cream. They all looked delicious but I had lost my appetite. I felt like every pair of eyes was watching me.
"Here have some apple pie." Terry handed me a small slice. I know that he was trying to make me feel better, but I politely declined, knowing that I wouldn't be able to choke it down. I really don't know why I'm surprised. I'm a muggle after all, and muggles can't be sorted. A single tear rolled down my cheek as I think to myself 'I don't belong here', but I wipe it away before anyone notices.
How are the teachers going to solve this problem though? Will they send me away? Will they place me in any house? Will I continue to rotate houses? Or will they simply let me choose what house I stay in?
Since all the teachers were out of the hall, Fred and George took the opportunity to stand up and approach me.
Their loud voices calling me and a few whispers filled up the silence. "Let's do the dare, ask Daphne the questions." Fred said, trying to cheer me up. "I'm sorry but I'm not really in the mood... and look. She's already spilling the truth." I nodded towards Daphne who was exposing all kinds of embarrassing things about herself. "Am I the only one that thinks Dumbledore's beard is sexy? Like come on, he's got to know how good he looks. And, I would never say it to his face, but I kinda have a thing for Snape. I guess older guys are my thing" she blurts out, quickly clapping a hand over her mouth as her face turns a deep shade of pink. The other Slytherins gasp for air as their laughs can be heard throughout the entire hall.
I heard the twins sigh and begin whispering to each other. I just stared at my pie, and wished that the professors would tell me their solution already. "Come here." Fred sighed out as he wrapped his arms around me from behind and hugged me tight. I let a small gasp escape my throat, as I was caught off guard but the red haired boy's rare display of affection. I smiled and blushed. "You can do the dare another time. We understand." George said. I rolled my eyes. He only cares about the dares.
The small doors next to the teacher's table burst open and teachers walked out. Dumbledore walked towards the podium. Fred and George sat next to me, and the entire hall's whispers died down at the sight of the Headmaster.
"Since there has been some... difficulties finding the perfect house for Miss Nibley, we have decided to let the students vote. With a flick of his wand, a carton box, hundreds of white small papers and a feathered flowing quill appeared in front of the podium. "After the feast has concluded, all students are required to write down the name of the house that they think Miss Nibley would best suit on a slip of parchment. Students can vote anytime throughout the week". Whispers erupted from the four tables.
The students vote? Okay, I'll admit I did not see that coming. As I shifted my plate to the side, I saw a piece of parchment appear on the table. Before anyone noticed it, I read the message discreetly.
Miss Nibley, Please meet me in my office after dinner has concluded, to discuss this matter. Albus Dumbledore.
After dinner, I entered the Headmaster's office, and to my surprise, Dumbledore and Snape were whispering in hushed voices at the Headmaster's desk.
"Jaida, until the voting has concluded, you are welcome to stay in whatever house you feel comfortable in" Dumbledore said, a small smile creeping onto his lips. A wave of relief washes over me as it sinks in that I may be able to have a full week spending time with my friends before my house is decided by my peers.
"Headmaster, may I suggest that Miss Nibley rotates houses and lessons until the voting has concluded?" Snape says, his voice flat. My heart sinks. The headmaster nods, "Very well". "Pack your bags Jaida, your first night is in Slytherin" Snape continues.
Fuck. Malfoy and Daphne. Could this day possibly get any worse?!
