***I had gotten settled in without any commotions, meeting Pansy in the common room to head to our dorm.
"How was Gryffindor?" She asked blandly as we headed up the stairs, clearly trying to spark a conversation.
I sighed. I was worn out and definitely not in the mood for small talk. Pansy seemed to have understood that, because she added;
"Listen, Jaida, I know that you might be going through a lot at the moment, but you will find a house. Trust in the sorting hat."
When I stayed quiet, she chuckled.
"Or at least trust in the other students, they'll find you a house. You know practically everyone in our year, right?"
"No," I scoffed, " turns out being the downfall of Hogwarts really makes people reluctant to get to know you, but I have a few friends from each house."
"Oh, do tell." Pansy headed towards her dormitory, opening the door. She walked in, and I followed, telling her about Luna, Cedric, Hermoine, Harry, Ron, and the twins (obviously leaving out the pranks). By the time I finished, we were both sitting down on her bed, too immersed in our conversation to realize how long we had been talking.
"I really like Gryffindor, everyone there is nice." Pansy was looking at me intently, and it was as though she was staring into my soul. With a shiver, I looked over to the window, watching as the stars twinkled in the black and blue sky, as the sunset started to fade away. "Fred and George are probably the people I have spent the most time with so far."
"I guess it's understandable." Pansy sighed, following my gaze to the window. "Slytherin doesn't have the most... friendly students. People like to stay away from us, we have a bad reputation, and an even worse relationship with the other houses." We both looked back at each other, and she smiled at me. "But I respect your decision. I'm sure Daphne wouldn't like having you here anyways. She'd be an even bigger pain in the ass if you were always around here."
"Wow, okay." I rolled my eyes and she laughed.
"I'm kidding...but seriously, watch out."
The lights were off in the room, since when we had entered, the fleeting light from the sunset had provided enough light for us to see our surroundings. But now, as the last shades of blue were disappearing from the sky, and being replaced with black, enveloping Hogwarts and the forbidden forest that stretched around us, as if all we had was a dark sheet dappled with dim stars and barely visible clouds to illuminate the room. The only light now was from the crescent moon hidden behind dark clouds. It wasn't bright enough to have shown the girl who had crept into the room, standing in the shadows.
"That's right." Daphne's voice made us both jump. "I'll be the biggest pain in the ass if you choose Slytherin. You'd probably lose us a hundred points in the first week." She turned on the lights, and Pansy and I blinked hard, our eyes adjusting to the light.
"Daphne, what the fuck?" Pansy got up, ready to defend me.
"You pop up out of nowhere, and now all of the sudden you get sorted into all of the houses. Something is wrong here, and I will find out what." She started to leave, before turning back. "Mark my words, Nibley." She spat out my last name as though it was revolting to even think about me, storming out of the room, covering her mouth and muttering to herself. 'Looks like the veritaserum is doing its job.' I thought. Hopefully it will wear off by tomorrow.
"Don't worry about her," Pansy looked back over to me. "She's just like that. But she's been talking a little more since lunch.."
I felt my cheeks grow hot, and instantly I hid my face, faking a laugh. I looked towards the door.
"Oh well, I've dealt with people like her before." I quickly covered up, rolling my eyes. "I can handle it."
When I looked back at her, she was regarding me with an air of suspicion.Yawning, suddenly, I stretched my arms and let out a loud sigh. "Anyways, it's been a long night. I feel kind of drowsy."
She nodded slowly. "Night.."
"Good night!"
I bolted out of the room, and ran over to my dorm, closing the door behind me. Turning on the light, I flopped onto my bed, looking around me, trying to switch my mind towards another topic.
A smile creeps upon my face as I remember that my next night is in Gryffindor. But that smile quickly fades as I remember something else.
Tomorrow, I have to complete my next dare.
