Emma's POV
I got dressed in the morning and a girl named Fay Dunbar did my hair for me. She's a first year also and has offered to help me in classes. Hermione also offered and I thanked them both. Saying they could both help. Especially Fay, she's a halfblood and had a friend at a muggle school who was deaf. She helped him.
Anyway we all went to breakfast together with Coal. Who has his harness back on, thanks to Hermione. We then all went to Potions and Coal was made to lay next to Snape's desk. Apparently we have this class with Slytherin. Professor Snape (Head of Slytherin House) took the roll.
"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion making" he says beginning his introduction speech to Potions. "As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses... I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death -- if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach" he explains. He then quizzed Harry who knew none of the answers.
"Do you know the answers Miss Vane?" Snape asks me.
"Of course sir" I say. "Asphodel and wormwood make a sleeping potion so powerful it is known as the Draught of Living Death. A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons. As for monkshood and wolfsbane, they are the same plant, which also goes by the name of aconite" I explain. Answering them in the order he'd asked Harry.
"Well? Why aren't you all copying that down?" he asks the class. Likely my auto quill already wrote it down. There was a sudden rummaging for quills and parchment. "Now Miss Dunbar, as you are sitting with Miss Vane. You shall be her assistant in this class. Do as she says when it comes to her potion, but do not neglect your own" he tells Fay and I hear him leave.
Once everyone had finished writing down the answers. Snape set us the task of making a cure for boils in pairs. Fay prepared our ingredients and cauldron. Then handed the ingredients to me as I stirred the potion. A loud hissing filled the dungeon. Coal barks and Fay pulls me away from the loud hissing. "What's going on?" I ask confused.
"Neville managed to melt Seamus's cauldron into a twisted blob, and their potion was seeping across the stone floor, burning holes in people's shoes" Fay explains.
"Idiot boy!" Snape snarls and I feel Coal brush against my side. I grip his harness. "I suppose you added the porcupine quills before taking the cauldron off the fire?" he says. I hear a whimper, that must be Neville. He sounds hurt. "Take him up to the hospital wing" I hear him order someone and heard the class door open then close.
"You -- Potter -- why didn't you tell him not to add the quills? Thought he'd make you look good if he got it wrong, did you? That's another point you've lost for Gryffindor" Snape tells Harry. Class continues with no farther mishaps and Fay took our potion up to Snape to be marked. We then go to Charms. Apparently Flitwick is very short and has to stand on a pile of books to see over his desk. He also has a high squeaky voice.
We then had defense against the dark arts. A class I had really been looking forward too, but Quirrell's lesson turned out to be a bit of a joke. His classroom smelled strongly of garlic, which everyone said was to ward off a vampire he'd met in Romania. Was afraid would be coming back to get him one of these days. He apparently wears a turban, that had been given to him by an African prince as a thank-you for getting rid of a troublesome zombie. He stuttered the whole time.
We then had lunch. Where the Weasley twins insisted that it was stuffed full of garlic as well. So that Quirrell was protected wherever he went. After lunch we go to history. Which is taught by a ghost named Professor Binns. According to Hermione Professor Binns had been very old indeed when he had fallen asleep in front of the staff room fire and got up next morning to teach, leaving his body behind him. Binns droned on and on while the others scribbled down names and dates. While I used a special type writer as I was bored from using my auto quill.
I decide to go to the library and study. Fay went with me. But had to leave to use the loo. As I type up my notes from today. Coal laying under the desk. "You Emma Vane?" a boy asks.
"Yes, why?" I ask as I stop taping.
"Draco Malfoy" he says shaking my hand. "Your mother went to school with my father" he states.
"Right, I remember her telling me about a Lucius Malfoy. He's a school governor right?" I ask him.
"Yes, he is the reason behind this school having the money to be renovated for you" he tells me.
"You're telling me this why?" I ask him.
"I just wanted to give you some friendly advice, stay on my good side. And you won't have a problem here" he tells me.
"Is that a threat?" I ask him.
"No, just advice" he tells me.
"Emma you ok?" Fay asks me.
"Yes, Draco was just leaving" I tell her.
"Hope you enjoy Hogwarts Emma" he says before I hear him walk away. Fay sits back down and I ask her where I was at with my taping. She tells me I'd done my Potions and Charms notes. I thank her and start on my DADA notes. When we finished we go to dinner before returning to the common room.
