It was the summer after their second year at Hogwarts and the twins had just gotten home. The car ride there was silent because of their exhaustion. But as soon as they got to the manor they were full of life, ready to tell their parents all about their eventful and crazy school year.

"You'll never believe what happened!" Draco said, and Davina pitched in. "Yeah! The Chamber of Secrets was opened and Ginny Weasley was the git that done it! Ginny Weasley!"

"And Potter speaks parseltongue!" Draco added, they were talking to their parents — wanting to tell their two favorite people about all the fun they were having, how much they enjoyed their school year, and all the stuff they had learned. They're mother stayed silent, her face neutral, and took their owl cages from them, letting their owls go as they flew into the air and soared around the manor.

Their father, on the other hand, looked over at their smiling and excited faces with disappointment, "Calm yourselves," He said dismissively, "You're both a Malfoy, act with poise." Both smiles dropped from their faces. Davina looked away, feeling her heart drop to her stomach. She grabbed her suit case and brought it inside, Draco following behind her.

And they didn't know it yet, but every year from this point forward they would come home less enthusiastically, ashamed for how much fun they're having, ashamed to even be enjoying Hogwarts at all, up until it would become a battleground for their family's war, and all traces of magic would be nearly be lost.

The summer dragged on slowly, as summers always do at the manor, and finally September first rolled around once again. It was time to go back to Hogwarts, where everything seemed to fly by way too fast.

Hours later, Davina was sitting in the Great Hall at the Slytherin table. She stared at her empty plate in front of her that would soon be filled with food, except she wasn't even the tiniest bit hungry. The food was delicious, yes, but she had other things on her mind. She had heard that Potter fainted on the train, there was Dementors lurking all over the castle, and Sirius Black had escaped from Azkaban — it's not that she cared about the whole Potter thing, it was quite pathetic, if you asked her. It was just something else to add onto the list.

"You're lying! Really, Malfoy?!" Goyle gaped, snapping Davina back into reality as she looked over. She was sitting beside Draco who was chatting on about the Malfoy's and Black's being related. Crabbe and Goyle, who were sitting in front of the twins, were all ears.

"Wicked," said Crabbe, biting into a roll.

It was a little later, after the singing, that Dumbledore had gotten up for a speech, hushing all the applause.

"Welcome!" said Dumbledore, "Welcome to another year at Hogwarts! I have a few things to say to you all, and as one of them is very serious, I think it is best to get it out of the way before you become befuddled by our excellent feast. As you will all be aware after their search of the Hogwarts Express, our school is currently playing host to some of the Dementors of Azkaban, who are here on Ministry of Magic business."

He paused, and Davina's mind traveled to where Sirius Black could possibly be — how did he escape?

Dumbledore rambled on for only God knows how long about the Dementors, and finally she heard him say, "On a happier note, I am pleased to welcome two new teachers to our ranks this year. First, Professor Lupin, who has kindly consented to fill the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher."

There was some scattered, rather unenthusiastic applause, "As to our second new appointment," Dumbledore continued as the lukewarm applause for Professor Lupin died away — but Davina didn't hear the rest, she was looped into a conversation beside her as Draco leaned forward some and told Crabbe and Goyle about Potter fainting. She snickered as Crabbe said he'd give up 100 galleons to see the look on Potter's face.
