Davina sat in Defense Against the Dark Arts, listing as Mad Eye Moody stood up in front of the class."Alastor Moody," He said, turning to the chalk board behind him as he started to write, "Ex-Auror, Ministry malcontent, and your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. I am here because Dumbledore asked me— end of story, goodbye, the end. Any questions?" He looked around the silent classroom, Davina felt his eyes land on her and she looked away.
"When it comes to the Dark Arts," He continues, looking across the crowd of silent students once again, "I believe in a practical approach. But first, which of you can tell me how many Unforgivable Curses there are?"
"Three, sir." Hermione Granger answered instantly, Davina sighed, she already knew there were three and exactly what which one was. She grew up being taught the Dark Arts before she even got into Hogwarts.
"And they are so named?" Moody said as he turned back to the chalk board.
Hermione started again, her voice quivering slightly as if she was scared to talk about them, "Because they are unforgivable, the use of any of them will—"
"Will earn you a one-way ticket to Azkaban, correct." Moody finishes for her, also finishing writing on his board as he turns back around, "Now the Ministry says you're too young to see what these curses do. I say different! You need to know what you're up against! You need to be prepared!" He paused and then looked back, "You need to find another place to put your chewing gum besides the underside of your desk, Mr. Finnigan!" Everyone looked over at Seamus as he looked up from his desk.
"No way, the old codger can see out the back of his head," He made an annoyed face and looked to his friend beside him. Davina smirked.
"And hear across classrooms!" Moody yelled as he spun around suddenly, Davina found herself and Draco both jumping slightly as he threw something at Seamus, Davina looked from the flying object back to Moody.
"So, which curse shall we see first?" He asked as he stepped towards everyone, Davina leaned back slightly, he really was mad.
"Weasley!" He yelled and the pale skinned, freckled-covered, redheaded boy looked up with nothing but fear on his face which caused Davina to wanna smirk but she didn't.
"Yes?" He instantly responded.
"Stand," Moody said, and so he did, "Give us a curse."
"Well, my dad did tell me about one, the Imperius Curse." He stuttered slightly.
"Oh, yeah, your father would know all about that; gave the Ministry quite a bit of grief a few years ago. Perhaps this will show you why," He said lowly, walking over to a jar and opening it with a creepy smile, ("Hellooo"). He picked up the creature, "Lovely little beauty," Davina heard him mutter as it crawled onto his hand and he lifted it from the jar.
He pulled out his wand and said "Engorgio, Imperio!" Then moce his wand as it flew onto a desk, then onto Crabbe's face. Davina laughed as he whined and reached up, squirming a little as it crawled onto his head.
"Dont worry, it's completely harmless." Moody said as it flew to another desk and onto a girls hand, Draco and Davina rose up some to see the bug-like creature in front of them. Davina had a open-smile across her face as the girl started to panic. Moody swung it above Ron's head, "If she bites.. she's lethal." He commented, watching as Ron looked up at the thing in horror as it crawled down onto his forehead.
Davina and Draco burst out laughing, and Moody snapped his head over in their direction, "What are you laughing at?" Davina jumped back as the creature suddenly landed on Draco's face, him and Goyle sat in front of her. She laughed as he freaked out, turning to his best friend, "Get it off!" he yelled and Davina covered her mouth to stop her laughed from growing louder.
"Talented, isn't she?" Moody asked in a mocking tone, Davina looked over as she saw Harry clapping and her face fell. Harry caught her gaze and he dropped his hands. Davina watched as he looked away and she ignored it, although she didn't like the feeling she was starting to feel towards him at all.
Davina got snapped out of her train of thoughts as Moody moved the creature across the room, "What should I have her do next? Jump out the window?" He moved the bug above a bucket of water and his energetic tone changed, "Drown herself?" Everyone went silent, it wasn't funny anymore.
He moved his wand and the bug went back to his hand, "Scores of witches and wizards have claimed that they only did You-Know-Who's bidding under the influence of the Imperius Curse. But here's the rub: How do we sort out the liars? Another, another. Up, up. Come on." He said as he looked over at Neville Longbottom, Davina almost forgot about the long-nosed prat, the last time she acknowledged him was when she first came to Hogwarts and asked her if she had seen his toad, then realized who she was and ran off. "Neville Longbottom, is it?" Moody asked, and Davina watched as the scared boy who had to be misplaced (since Gryffindor's know for it's bravery) hesitated, then stood up.
"Professor Sprout tells me you have an aptitude for herbology." He asked more than stated, Davina leaned back in her chair.
"There's the.. The Cruciatus Curse," He stuttered out finally, fumbling his words.
"Correct, correct. Come, come." Moody said, "Particularly nasty, the torture curse." Davina leaned up over her desk and hit Draco's shoulder.
"Draco—"
"Crucio!" Moody interrupted her enthusiastically as he pointed his wand down at the bug, causing it to make hissing-like noises, clearly in pain. Davina watched as Neville wrinkled his face up, forcing himself to stare at it.
"Stop it! Can't you see it's bothering him? Stop it!" Davina heard the mudblood scream, this made Moody stop and put it on her book.
"Perhaps you can give us the last unforgivable curse, Miss Granger." Moody said and Davina felt the hairs on her arms stand up, getting chills as she thought back to the first time she witnessed it, the killing curse.
She stared off into space, the rest of the room fading away, only getting brought back by to reality by Moody yelling, "Avada Kedavra!" She looked up at Draco, and saw how he was no longer in his leaned back and relaxed position.
"The killing curse, only one person has known to have survived it and he's sitting in this room," Davina found herself instinctively looking from Draco to Harry as Moody approached him. She leaned up more, watching. Moody simply took out his flask and gulped down a drink as the rest of the class sat there silently.
**
Davina sat with Draco as they watched each person drop their pieces of parchment into the Goblet of Fire, Goyle was talking away to Draco as Davina watched a hufflepuff boy get pushed up to the circle around the goblet. He dropped his piece of paper in and his group of friends clapped as he walked back out.
Davina scanned the room and saw Ron and Harry side-by-side, he glanced over at her and gave her a small smile. She didn't return it, instead she scoffed and looked away. She heard Draco pause mid-conversation behind her and lean forward.
"What's Potter doing smiling at you?" He asked, Davina just shrugged.
"I don't know, must be because I got all the looks." She looked back at him and smirked.
