Chapter 46 - 50

Israel walked up to the wagon Pharaoh had ordered to take them to Egypt. He looked back at his people, all seventy of them. His sons, their wives and children, his daughters and the keepers of his cattle all in wagons around him.

He sighed, remembering the night before, when God told him that He was going to be with him through the journey to Egypt after he had offered sacrifices.

The journey from Canaan to Egypt was long but when they arrived at Goshen, Joseph had already been there in his chariot, awaiting his father's arrival.

He immediately got down and ran to his father. Isreal got down from his wagon and was immediately embraced by his long lost son.

"Father " Joseph sobbed into his neck, hugging him tight.

"My son" Isreal sighed. They stayed like that for a long while after so many years of being separated.

After their little reunion, Joseph and four of his brothers appeared before Pharaoh and he gave them the best of the land in Goshen, the land of Rameses. Isreal then went before Pharaoh and blessed him and all his family's needs were provided.

The famine was still severe in the land and the people complained to Joseph about it. But all their money had been spent on food and there was none left. They then decided to sell their cattle for food, but it only lasted for another year. Later on, when they realized they had nothing left to exchange for food, they sold their land and themselves as servants to Pharaoh for food.

After this was done, they were all declared slaves to Pharaoh and were given seed to sow in the land and one - fifth of their harvest was to be given to Pharaoh. This was done by all except those in the land of the priest because they already received a fixed allowance from Pharaoh.

Isreal then requested for Joseph's presence and requested to be buried, after his death, with his fathers and not in Egypt. Isreal made him promise to do so before he left.

Some time later when Isreal fell ill, the sons of Joseph were brought to him and he placed his right hand on the younger and the left on the older. This action displeased Joseph but his father told him that the younger would surely be greater than the older.

Israel then called the twelve of his sons and blessed them according to the blessings suitable to them. He then reminded them to bury him among his fathers. With that he curled up in his bed and breathed his last.

"Father " Joseph whispered and fell on his father's face crying. The land of Egypt mourned Israel's death for seventy days and Israel was embalmed by the physicians for forty days.

After taking permission from Pharaoh, all the household of Israel apart from the children went up to bury him in the cave of the field at Machpelah in Canaan.

His brothers were worried that they would be treated harshly by Joseph since their father was already dead. They went to him saying that Isreal commanded that he should forgive them before he died and Joseph assured them that he was not angry.

After Joseph had lived for a hundred and ten years he called his brothers and told them
"I am about to die, but God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob"

After his death, he was embalmed and put in a coffin in Egypt...
