The bell rang and Zuma grabbed his bag and ran out the door. He had to be quick to get back before anyone noticed he was gone and found his few belongings. They could sell them to a pawn shop. People on the streets would do anything to survive. When he got back, there was already someone there, but not someone who would live on the streets. A women was stood near where he was living, waiting. Was she a police officer? Was she going to arrest him? She watched him as he tried to walk around her without being noticed. That didn't work.
'Are you Zuma Waters?' she asked.
'Yyyes... Pwease don't awest me! I didn't mean to steal food! I..I can't affowd it! I'm too young to go to jail!'
The woman looked startled.
'I'm not going to arrest you. I have come to show you something.'
'Me? You must be mistaken. I don't know you. I was told to not twust stwangews.' The woman gave a little chuckle.
'I'm Dorothy Parker. You want to come now?'
'Ok.'
'Bring your things.'
Zuma ran in and grabbed a small cardboard box that he had cleverly hid in the shadows of a bin. He quickly checked that nobody had found them. They hadn't been touched. Inside were some clothes, a picture frame that held a photo of a family with large grins, and a camera.
'Awe you suwe I'm not going to jail?' he asked uncertainly.
'I promise.'
Dorothy opened up a car door. Zuma stepped in. Why am I trusting her anyway? She's probably kidnapping me. Well, it's better than the hellhole I'm already living in. He looked out the window as she climbed into the driver's seat and started to drive.
'Why awe you doing this?' he blurted out.
'Doing what?'
'Finding a home fow me. I'm guessing that's what you awe doing.' She nodded.
'I've been watching you on the street. You're not like the others. So I thought you needed a chance to shine. I have a son your age. I think you will get along fine.'
'So I'm coming to stay with you?'
'Yep'
'I guess I can live with that.' Dorothy let out another chuckle.
Zuma looked out the window, and saw the sun shining on the ocean in the near distance. He watched it in complete awe, remembering when he was able to run around in the cool water and laugh at his sister who drank the sea water by accident and was wiping her tongue on a towel, trying to rid the flavour. He smiled.
'We're here.'
He got out of the car and looked up at the building before him. It was huge. Dorothy opened the door and walked in.
'I'm home honey, and with someone you need to meet!' she called out. A brown-haired boy slid down the banister to greet Zuma.
'Chase?'
