*Flashback*

Dad has been gone for a week- It's as if our Father never existed. The usual beer bottles don't  line the coffee table, the smell of cigars no longer linger. Mom's bruises have started to fade. She started working more to get more money to feed all of us. Although It might have been to escape. Not us- no dear god, no. She loves her children more than anything, but the house, the empty bed, is suffocating.

Night after night Kael who is 7, has learned some recipes from mom and makes us dinner. Of course, he taught me what he knows. We spend each night together. Kael never has to babysit me. I always do my homework, brush my teeth, and eventually go to bed. We've never been just siblings, we are best friends too. We've had our fights, but we've always been close.

Flashback over

Right now felt just like that. Instead I cooked. We ate, we talked and laughed. It always felt so natural, It was practically a routine.

There was a knock at the door mom was home from a business trip. Although she was a professional she always made the house feel warm and fuzzy when she was home.

"How's your week been, honey?" She asks genuinely, snuggling up against the couch

"Great. Kael's back, you're home now, although I did run into Daniel today he asked about you"

"Danny was a sweet boy. What a shame it didn't work out" She sighs as if to say I wish your father had been like that.

"Yeah. It's really ok. No hard feelings, just some awkward moments"

"So ma, how long are you home for?" Kael asks

"2 days before I fly to Bangladesh, for another  conference" she rubs her face skimming over her crows feet "Let's just enjoy the time we have for right now."

"Okay" my brother and I say in unision

Two days pass in a flash, and It's Monday again. I rush home from school, charging into my room. I take off my sweaty shorts and striped tee. I replace it with a simple white tank top and black leggings. I let my hair loose from its tight ponytail. I stay in my room doing homework till about 9 o'clock. By this time it's dark out.

I hear bickering downstairs, so I check it out. I sit on the stairs unnoticed somehow. Malfoy is here. Great.

"I'll pay you back, I'm just an intern right now and I have 150k in student debt" He chucks his baseball cap onto the empty couch.

"Not my problem" Malfoy replies calmly

"C'mon You're my friend. Friends don't owe."

"Friend or not, you still have bloody debt owed to me. We made a deal"

"Fuck the deal. Does 4 years of friendship mean nothing to you?"

"Yeah, it means I've been lenient with you, Kael. Not anymore. Now I'm going to take something from you, something you value far more than money!"

"Out of my house, Malfoy!"

"Fine. I'll get out of your bloody house, but this isn't over." Malfoy's cheeks burned red, no longer matching his pale skin.

Malfoy leaves. I jump up  from the stairs, pretending I heard nothing. I enter the kitchen skimming the contents of the fridge realizing there's no food  to make dinner with.

"I'm going to the grocery store, to get some food, want anything in particular?"

"Um no. I'm good" He stops rubbing his temple for a moment, giving me an appreciative smile.
