Blake's POV
The rays of the early morning sun stretched across my face through the blinds, interrupting my not so deep sleep. I sat up and immediately, the memories from last night came rushing back. I knew it was wrong to eavesdrop, but I couldn't help it.
Just as I was about to turn out of her street last night, I had noticed that Dani left her purse in my car. So, I made a U-turn back to her house and I was about to knock on the door when I heard her mom's distraught voice. I didn't know what made me stop, but I did and I over heard their conversation, right from when she was trying to calm her mom, down to the secret conversation with her dad. She was so close to the door that I could hear every single thing.
I would have never imagined that something as serious as the Vipers was her secret, that she and her family were in so much trouble. I knocked and then went in with the intention of confronting her about why she was hiding such a thing, but when I saw the frightened look she shared with her mom, I decided against it. So instead, I pretended not to have heard anything, returned her purse, cracked a joke to lighten the mood and then left.
I didn't think she'd be happy to know that I was eavesdropping, since this whole thing was the cause of our previous fight, but I also couldn't help her without exposing myself so now I was stuck. Also, the fact that she was 'hanging out' with that douche wasn't making things any better. I hated the guts of that guy, he gave off a sinister feeling but I seemed to be the only one who could feel it, well except for Thomas. I mean, she actually gave him a nickname and then he goes 'I actually like it'. Trust me, if looks could kill, I'd be in jail for murder at the moment.
I got up, went to freshen up and some minutes later, I was done and I threw on my most comfy sweatpants. I then made my way down the stairs, the memory of when Dani saw me shirtless flashing through my head and I smiled.
The look on her face was so funny, I had to refrain myself from laughing. Speaking of which, I wonder what Daniella's doing at the moment. Hopefully, she's not already on her 'date' with that doofus.
I sat on the couch and then decided to call her but to no avail. The thought that she was probably excited to hang out with André made me really annoyed. I was the only one at home, well except for Steve who was still asleep. Elsie had gone with her nanny to her morning yoga class. For some reason, yoga had helped get her out of depression after our parents died and so she's been attending yoga classes since then.
I tried Dani's number again and again, but still no answer. Alright, if she was too busy to talk to me, then that's fine, I thought as I dropped my phone on the couch. I proceeded to the kitchen to make my breakfast which was a bowl of cereal of course, I couldn't cook for the life of me. I was getting a jug of milk out of the refrigerator when I noticed a post it note stuck to it.
I noticed that it was from my aunt and I peeled it off to read. No doubt she had to leave early this morning again. She had come back home alone yesterday from the trip she was on with my uncle to check on us, but she couldn't spend much time with us because of the game.
Apart from leading the gang, they also took over my parent's businesses for the time being, until I was old enough and ready to manage things, hence their constant absence from the house.
The note consisted of an apology for taking off again and a threat to me to fulfil my promise and actually go to the hospital to get my eyes checked. She made such a fuss about my bruised eye later when I got home last night and made me promise, no scratch that, she made me swear to visit the hospital.
In my opinion, I was fine, but I totally expected her reaction as she was always being overly dramatic. She told me to take care of everyone and also warned Steve to stop being a pain in my ass. Huh, wish it was that easy.
I laughed lightly as I put back the note so Steve could see and read it when he finally woke up.
I sat down on a stool by the kitchen island, made my cereal and just as I was about to start eating, Steve walked in, looking utterly disheveled.
"Did you get into a fight in your sleep?" I asked, eyeing him.
"Shut up" he retorted and went straight to the coffee maker. It was obvious he had a hangover from last night's celebratory party which I didn't attend thanks to Jed ruining my mood and also because of Dani.
At that, my mind drifted back to last night and I became worried all over again. I was feeling so much responsibility for Dani's safety now, I mean, we were friends and I didn't need a shrink to tell me that I had begun to have feelings for her, but after last night, I felt like it was my job to keep her safe from apparently, the Vipers and no good André - yes, that's what I was calling him now. Besides, I of all people should know how dangerous the Vipers were.
I finished with my breakfast and went back to the living room. I checked my phone to see if she had returned my calls or had at least sent a text, but nothing. It was ten in the morning, she should be awake right? I mean, as much as I hated to admit it, she had a date to prepare for.
Soon enough, a call from her came through my phone, interrupting my train of thoughts. Finally.
"Hi Blake" came her groggy, sleepy voice through the phone, confirming my suspicion that she was still asleep. Shit, now I felt dumb for calling repeatedly, I should've guessed sooner.
"Sorry I missed your calls, I was asleep""Well that explains a lot. Sorry for the numerous missed calls" I apologized sheepishly, glad she wasn't present to see my cheek turn red from embarassment.
"It's.....fine, no problem" she replied, amidst a yawn "What's up? Why were you calling?"
"Uh..." I started and then asked myself. Why was I calling? I couldn't tell her that I barely slept last night because I was thinking about her being in trouble, and I obviously wasn't going to tell her that I was super jealous of the fact that she ditched me for André and wanted to know if she was already on her 'not date', so I did what I knew how to do best, evade the question.
"Uh, don't you have a date to prepare for?" I asked, when what I really meant to say was "How about you ditch André and come hang out with me instead"
"At ten in the morning?" She asked incredulously, amusement evident in her voice "Do you make all your dates get up so early just to spend the day with you?"
"Ha! So you do admit it's a date" I accused, ignoring her question again. She didn't have to know that I barely went on dates anymore and I couldn't even remember the last time I had a girlfriend.
"No it's not Blake, for the umpteenth time, we're just hanging out. As friends. That's it" she whined.
"Yeah sure" I replied sarcastically "You're probably going to watch a romantic movie 'as friends' or maybe go eat fancy food at a fancy restaurant still 'as friends' and then you're going to talk and laugh and what not. Hmph! You shouldn't trust him so easily you know"
"Oh my God Blake" she replied, laughing so hard now.
"What?" I asked, confused as to what was funny.
"Are you jealous?" She asked, making me widen my eyes in realization that I sounded like a jealous boyfriend. Shit.
"What?! Of course not" I denied as I felt my cheeks heat up for the second time just that morning "Why would I be jealous?"
"That's a lie, you're definitely jealous" she accused, still giggling.
"No I'm not" I replied, flustered now.
"Whatever Blaky" she replied and I smiled. I was so whipped. I used to hate it when she called me that, but now I was basically expecting it.
"Anyways, I have to go now. I have to get ready for my 'date' with Dré, remember?" She teased. Ugh! She could at least stop calling him Dré "Bye Blaky"
"Yeah bye. Have fun" I replied sarcastically and she hung up.
