Christmas is coming. One morning in mid-December, Hogwarts awakens to find itself covered in several feet of snow. The lake froze solid and the Weasley twins are punished for bewitching several snowballs so that they follow Quirrell around, bouncing off the back of his turban. The few owls that manage to battle their way through the stormy sky to deliver mail have to be nursed back to health by Hagrid before they can fly off again—aside from Askalaphus.
"That is one STRANGE bird." Y/N states to himself as his owl nibbles at his finger after giving Y/N a note.
Turns out that Y/N has to spend his Christmas at Hogwarts, since his mom has to go away on an "important" work-related issue.
Since this would be the first Christmas that Y/N and his mother haven't spend together, he can already imagine her being an emotionally wreck—which of course she was.
Y/N used to be a big fan of Christmas, especially Santa Claus and the Reindeer. It seemed to him that Santa was the MAN. He used to get EVERYTHING he wanted on Christmas...BUT things weren't always what it seemed.
Y/N actually remembers the day he stopped believing in Santa Claus. It was around the time he was 7 years old and him and his mum were going out Christmas shopping.
And it never dawned on him that they were out...
CHRISTMAS.SHOPPING. They went to 4 different malls and each one had a different Santa. Now Y/N might have been young, but one thing he wasn't, was FUCKING.STUPID.
As far as Y/N was concerned, somebody had some explaining to do—and BOY did Diana explain her ass off.
Y/N has always been a bit bitter about the holidays after that. No such thing as a Easter Bunny? Cupid? Leprechauns? Tooth Fairy? What else do parents lie about?
Anyway, Professor Mcgonagall had come around the week before taking roll call on who would be leaving for the holidays. Out of the four of them, Hermione was the only one leaving, much to her dismay. She really liked having Y/N around as company for the past couple months, Hogwarts itself was a good bonus, but mostly Y/N.
He was so...mysterious to her. She likes it.
"I do feel sorry," Draco lets out during Potions class, "for all those people who have to stay at Hogwarts for Christmas because they're not wanted at home."
He is looking over at Harry, Ron, and Y/N as he speaks, causing Crabbe and Goyle to chuckle.
When they leave the dungeons at the end of Potions, they find a large fir tree blocking the corridor ahead. Two enormous feet sticking out at the bottom and a loud puffing sound tells them that Hagrid is behind it.
"Hi, Hagrid, want any help?" Ron asks, sticking his head through the branches.
"Nah, I'm all right, thanks, Ron."
"Would you mind moving out of the way?" comes Malfoy's cold drawl from behind them. "Are you trying to earn some extra money, Weasley? Hoping to be gamekeeper yourself when you leave Hogwarts, I suppose — that hut of Hagrid's must seem like a palace compared to what your family's used to."
